Readers ask: "Wait, shouldn't this be 2 books?" - Well...My answer: I actually was going to make this two books it but decided against it at the last minute and I don't regret it.When I first started writing this first book in the Baxter Family Saga, I had no idea I was breaking some rule about having two stories in one or that I was supposed to have two different books. The fact that I wasn't writing a standard story that worked towards a particular formula was one of the reasons they were interested. I just knew that I had a story that I liked and showed how a family's history can repeat itself in strange ways. I also felt that the idea of having two stories in one book like this was something I'd never really seen before.Some people have said, it wasn't done right, or it was supposed to be two books...I say, Unchained Hearts came out exactly how I hoped it would and the readers' responses have shown that. As a first book, I'm excited and grateful that I wrote it and that my former publisher, Beau Coup, thought it was good enough to publish. I have also been fortunate to have some great notes from readers who said they loved it and even asked me about the characters a little more...I LOVE THAT.Unchained Hearts is supposed to raise questions, it's supposed to have loose ends, it's supposed to make you scratch your head and question my sanity. It's also supposed to have a bit of a soap opera/Lifetime movie feel to it.�Why? The thing about those two mediums is that you wind up losing time with them. I remember saying to myself, I'll just watch this one lifetime movie or a little bit of this soap. A couple of hours later, I'm wondering where the time went and why do I have to get up when something's about to get good. I have lost many hours watching Lifetime movies.I got sucked in and I like that.Believe me, I thought I was going a little crazy when I wrote it because it felt a bit scary and different. No family is ever that neat and tidy and the Baxters are no exception. The skeletons will rattle from time to time and may never stop.�That's fine with me; bring on the bones, I say.So if you want to get the full understanding of the Baxters, check out Portrait of Gray and Story of Us. Then you'll understand just how much the Baxters have had to endure and why the crazy first story was just the beginning.Unchained Hearts is now on Pinterest! Wow, absolutely wonderful.

This was a recommended book and I didn't even read the summary before I purchased it. I was a little confused at the beginning when I was introduced to Kyle and then the story started about her mother. But as it started to get going, I completely forgot about Kyle until I was brought back to the present and then very much enjoyed going back into the past but this time being Kyle's past.
Wow, that is all that I can say. I have read many books with twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat, but the way it was portrayed and introduced with how it was beautifully written, this book takes the cake. One of the best books, hands down, that I have read this year and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Two love stories in one!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and i will definitely be seeking out more to ready by her. There is so much more to this story than the typical boy meets girl etc. The author gives a glimpse of how race relations were in the early 70's. She illustrates how it wasn't just the white people that had to adjust to the changes. That was fascinating to me. I don't want to give too much away because this is tale that is full of interesting twists and turns and I feel that it would be wrong of me to give "spoilers". Suffice to say that this is a very well written and gripping book with characters that are east to relate to.

This one is a keeper...

I must admit I didn't initially like Lila when the story started and I wanted to skip the first few chapters because it dropped back some years to when Cass and Lila met BUT I admit I grew to like them. The beginning made Cass and Lila make since especially given the interracial dynamic. Cass and Lila could have had their own book but reading their story would later parallel into the story of Kyle and Randy (who knew and what a surprise) which made the whole story make sense. As others have mentioned this is two love stories within one book and for me I would not have cheered for Kyle and Randy if I didn't read Cass and Lila first. I won't give the stories away but this is a well crafted book with interesting characters that the more I read the more interested I became in what happened next. I will definitely buy the 2nd installment to hopefully catch up on characters that have been introduced and perhaps more background on others that had a small part in the 1st book.
