A stunning new assessment of a very murky subject

It might be thought that effective espionage has only existed in the 20th century, but as the British Director of Military Operations, James Edmonds, commented in 1908, the military successes of Napoleon and Wellington "were largely due to carefully elaborated spy systems". Napoleon himself is reputed to have said that a spy in the right place was worth 40,000 men, although his famous spy Schulmeister was only ever rewarded with plenty of money and not the Legion d'Honneur he reputedly craved. On the other side of the coin, the French would regularly attribute their setbacks to "English gold". The authoress tells the story of the operations run by the British during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Begun by the Aliens Office to control French agitators among the �migr�s fleeing Revolutionary France, under Wickham the networks expanded into a system capable of both gathering vital military and political intelligence, while channelling money to the Continental Allies. It should be more accurately described as the activities of both the British and French, as the various French factions and leaders jockey for position backed by Britain. Virtually anyone of any consequence is included, plus unsavoury characters and throughout the story, the shadowy and cunning Joseph Fouche lives a charmed life, keeping just enough incriminating documentation out of Napoleon's way to prevent the Emperor taking decisive action against him. The success of the British network is stunning - they are often in control of the Paris police - as they attempt to support a series of potential new rulers in France (and ultimately Bonaparte). Then, they act in support of their Allies against the expansionist plans of Emperor Napoleon. There were disasters too, especially in 1804, when the network is broken up by Napoleon's men. In fact all the elements of a good spy story are here, including double-crosses, bribes, multiple aliases, assassination conspiracies, spies dressed as monks, the unfortunate souls who found themselves sacrificed to save operations or senior individuals. Naturally, the authoress concentrates on the Anglo-French duel, but there are many interesting details included which influence the Wars in general, notably the Bank of France's near-bankruptcy in Sept 1805. Aside from the murder of Tsar Paul I, something that has remained an opaque subject until this book, she can only briefly look at the activities of the Continental Allies, but there are several smoking guns left east of the Rhine, which are worthy of further investigation. Few books in the last twenty years have added greatly to our knowledge of the Napoleonic period, but this is certainly one of them. Just one word of caution - this is not a James Bond novel! These men were involved in something far more complex and were doing it for real. The first 30 pages or so see a whole series of characters emerging in quick succession as the British deal with the various factions, so take it steady at the start. All becomes clear soon after, especially when the focus turns directly on Consul and later Emperor Napoleon. The real backdrop to many key events emerges - ever wondered how Napoleon eluded the British blockade of Egypt? Essential and worthwhile reading.

No wonder they keep this stuff secret

I did enjoy this book - but it is not one I found easy to read. Even with Elizabeth Sparrow's relatively easy style it is difficult at times to unravel the complex relationships and payments - double crosses and so on. The world of subterfuge is a truly murky place.
The book is well set out though and the topic is utterly fascinating. So while I found it difficult to untangle the threads I found the subject compelling.
She has made the divisions in sections and chapters well, so while you can read the book from start to finish for a complete overview - if you have a specific interest in a time period or place it is easy to pick up and read for that period - which is really what I ended up doing.
Perhaps only giving 4 stars is underselling the book because the topic is difficult and Sparrow does do a great job making sense of it. A very impressive job actually - it just didn't grab me by the throat the way some other books do.
I would definitely recommend this book for those with an interest in the British History in this period or for people with an interest in the Napoleonic Wars. Or maybe for people who just want to know how to be sly and cunning - there are some great tips!

Actually 3 1/2 Stars - Interesting Material/Frustrating Read

First off I should say that I could not put this book down (until I would get a headache - from trying to keep all the info in order in my head). It really was very interesting. What was the problem? It was a very frustrating read. The book could have been a 5 star incredible read if it was just organized. Even though the book is broken up into dated sections - she did not keep to the dates and would float back and forth into the past and future. One moment you would read an agent was executed and then 2 pages later she would be talking about him and the prison he was in. One minute she would be discussing 1804 the next 1799. If she had written the book in chronological order it would have been much easier to understand. Also it would have been a lot easier to understand what was going on if she discussed the important battles that were going on at the time. I had to have a book about the Napoleonic War sitting next to me so that I could see what was going on with the armies etc. This book could have been amazing if she brought the agents to life on the page. It was hard to understand what was going on with the agents when she would go back and forth in dates. Hopefully some day someone will take all this information and make a more interesting and understandable book.

Disappointed

Nah, don't bother. I mean, if you've never ever read any kind of office politics or career self-help or leadership books before, some of these phrases might open up your eyes to a different way of dealing with situations that come up at work. Overall though, I found the phrases a little too slow and obvious, and I don't think you'd want to repeat them verbatim in most situations.

I was a little surprised at the sections on sexual harassment and the like - they sort of changed the nature of the book, and were pretty much geared toward women. I expected the book to be more about navigating dangerous political waters at a higher level, but found the book to focus too much on HR-type issues that might be more applicable to less senior office workers.

If the subject of this book or its title appeals to you, I'd recommend checking out Secrets to Winning at Office Politics: How to Achieve Your Goals and Increase Your Influence at Work and Change Your Questions, Change Your Life: 10 Powerful Tools for Life and Work (BK Life (Paperback)). "Perfect Phrases" or any of these corporate stooge self-help books might (and should) make you vomit a little when you read them, and so do my recommendations, but if you're going to work in an office anyway, this is good stuff to know if you want to get anywhere.

Great collection of talking points for business

The workplace carries its share of difficult situations and interpersonal conflicts. Finding the right words and thinking through the bigger picture of implications is something every manager struggles with as personalities, politics, and business demands make getting work done a challenge. This book contains many great examples of scenarios where precision in language is vital. While you can't predict every situation, the chapters are arranged in such a way that key categories help you pick and choose material that will help make your important and difficult conversations more effective.

Very Informative but needs more illustrations

I purchased this book based on the reviews here at Amazon. At the time of the writing of this review 30 of 30 reviews are 5 star reviews. I think I have to be the odd man out on this one.

The basis of this book is Mclean's analysis of the golf swing. Through his years of video analysis he has come to understand the purely essential elements of the golf swing. He transmits this knowledge by identifying 8 steps of the golf swing to the reader. In each step he clearly states the fundamentals (must haves)to the golfer. He clearly knows his stuff and it is written down meticulously in this book.

Just a quick note about my golf experience. Basically, I'm starting fresh from a 20 year absence from the game. I think it fair to say, that I'm at the beginner stages. It has always been my desire to have proper golf instructions, however, they are very costly and not in my current budget. Hence, I decided to buy a book on the golf swing in lieu of lessons. I chose this book because of all the favourable reviews.

What I liked:

Jim Mclean qualifies himself as one who has researched golf swings since the 1960's. I believe him; he has researched the golf swing using a scientific approach to video analysis. I really like the way he has researched the book, it is clearly his life work.

He makes separate lists of both the fundementals and non-fundementals in the golf swing. His research has indicated that many of the popular fad tricks and swings are actually quite bad for the swing. He gives a clear list for both.

Every step of his golf swings are clearly itemized. I really like this format. As I develop and practice my swing I can mentally go through these items much like a checklist. It is a very thorough analysis of each step.

What I didnt like:

Lack of illustrations/photos. The illustrations provided are very good, the photos are lacking in that they are black and white. I learn both by reading and viewing the photos/pictures. There are not even close to enough pictures in the book. I did note that his website has downloadable videos (at a cost), that Im sure clarifys everything, however, I would like to have seen these either in picture or the form of a dvd movie with the book.

He assumes the reader understands golf jargon and linguistics. Terms like open and closed club face, and the "hogan plane" may not be familiar to readers. I found no explanation or diagrams for these terms.

The book assumes that you will use a video camera and analyze your swing using the video. I was not made aware of this prior to buying the book.

Frequent mentions of his golf school leaving me with the feeling that what I really need is the golf school and this book is only a supplement to the classes.

Finally, I'm sure the drills that he offers are very good, however, all of them are explained in text and have no accompanying pictures. Most of them I was guessing at what I was supposed to do, because I just could not picture it.

All these negatives and yet I give the book 4 stars! The reason for this is the obvious completeness of his analysis which is clearly transmitted to the book. Of all the negatives I put in this review, the most glaring to me is the lack of demonstration of the drills in the form of pictures or photos. A good book with a few minor shortcomings. In my opinion, the book provides only part of the teaching method, the remainder can be picked up on his website at additional cost. Because of the thoroughness of the material, I can see myself making these purchases to complete my knowledge. However, I wish the book would have said this at the onset. It has come as somewhat of a surprise to me.

Misleading Title for Book

I thought I was paying $6.00 for the e-book, "8 Step Golf Swing". Little did
I know that the $6.00 would only buy me step 1. I need to spend another $42.00 for the complete book, all 8 steps. No golf book is worth $48.00! I think I just wasted $6.00.

This is a good guide to understanding and improving the golf swing. It does require a video which did not come with the book, but which, fortunately, I had. Even without the video it is of some help

Keeps getting better and better!

xxxHolic just keeps getting better and better. While last volume we saw a major progression with the plot with Yuko battling a mysterious villian's quest, here we get some BIG personal development between Watanuki and Domeki with heaps of romantic suggestions and Watanuki actually being forced to ponder what Domeki means to him.

It also becomes apparent that Yuko "hired" Domeki for a much greater reason that simply to repay a fee. Several characters mention or speculate on Domeki's destiny and where he's headed with in becoming obvious that big changes are instore for him in future volumes (having seen the next volume in Japanese I can say this is definitly the case!).

The art is of course first class and I simply loved the translation notes in the back (5 pages!). This manga continues to educate me in the Japanese language and culture.

XXXHolic volume six finds Watanuki on his own, as Yuko has gone to "make gods" in Tsubasa, the crossover manga starring Sakura and Shaoran. Watanuki had become a kitchen slave, making treats for Yuko and Motonoki as they downed gallons of alcohol. At last, he is going to get a vacation! But rather than have free time, Watanuki becomes embroiled in a friendship that might kill him.

In the park, he meets a beautiful woman. They quickly become like a mother and son. But something is wrong, and Domeki might have to take drastic measures to help his friend. This story takes up the last two-thirds of the volume. The first third is a cute story where Domeki and Watanuki journey to the spirit world with the help of a magical lantern.

The cultural notes in the back are interesting and helpful, more so than any other manga I have read. Anyone who has read all the notes from XXXHolic will have an above-average knowledge of Japanese culture.

And, as usual, Yuko's outfits are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!! Just look at the cover!!! The CLAMP studio is SO skilled at designing clothes.
