5th grade math from multiple approaches

Parents with an undergrad degree in math might be confused by the multiple approaches of enVisionMATH� Common Core for grade 5, but they should be able to help their child with most of the problems in the text. It is recommended that the parents and students review their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills, keep a calculator handy, review number line guidelines, learn to use a matrix and practice estimating. Be open to new math terms such as “repeated addition”, instead of multiplication, or “compatible numbers” as used in estimating.

Parents should also de-emphasize problems presented in the text that are not relevant to the concepts in the current section, such as the Geometry question in section 3-2 on page 67 (Similar-looking figures are subsequently defined on page 308, or Section 12-1. It was also noted that the page 67 problem did not give dimensions, so it can’t be determined whether the sides are parallelograms, as required by the definition on page 308.) Other off-topic questions include question number 26 on page 35 and questions 18 – 20 on page 205. Another example is how Topic 3 uses expressions that are typically introduced with Algebra, then 130 pages later, in Topic 8-1, the term Algebraic Expression is actually defined. In addition, parents should realize there are typos, such as the example on page xxii of the “Problem-Solving Handbook” section, which should read 13 rows of 4 ones, not “13 rows of 4 once”. This sample question in the “Problem Solving Handbook” section is meaningless, unless the typo is caught and corrected.

Students and Parents should be careful of some of the definitions, such as “compatible numbers” which appears on page 31 and is changed slightly for questions 23 – 34 on page 94. In short, a good math teacher will probably be able to skip around the text to present topics in a more logical order and parents can help if they master a few new or uncommon math terms.

Part of the confusion with enVisionMATH� comes from the way the authors seem to use one approach for a while then shift to a different approach. In the first half of the text there are over 2,400 problems for the students. At least five different approaches are used. The most confusing approach is the estimating which comprises over 20% of the problems. Other approaches that are used involve “mental math” or working out the answer with pencil and paper (50% of the problems), approximately 3% of the problems direct the student to use a calculator, for approximately 12% of the problems the student is requested to use a model, or a matrix or a number line. Other methods, such as definitions or comparison make up over 15% of the problems.

enVisionMATH� stresses a lot of estimating. While estimating is a worthwhile skill, there are challenges. One of the challenges is students can estimate a number of different answers to the same problem. In addition, to determine the best estimate the student might need to determine all close estimates then determine the exact answer, then construct a number line. For example, question #10 of Topic 4-5 asks the student to “use compatible numbers to estimate each quotient” for 289/3. (The text promotes the theory that a compatible number should make the solution easier to estimate.) In the referenced problem, it doesn’t look like any number could be substituted for 3 that would make the problem easier, but the 289 could be changed to 270 or 300 or 288 or 291 and the remainder would be eliminated, which might be considered easier. The referenced section of the text asks only for an “estimate of the quotient” so it appears that 90, 96, 97 and 100 each answer what was asked. Other similar sections of the text ask for the best estimate. For the 289/3 problem the student would have to graph the estimates and the actual answer on a number line or do a comparison analysis of the differences between the actual answer and each estimate.

It seems likely that most students will be able to navigate their way through the confusion, if not on their first try then there are good odds they will master it when they repeat fifth grade math once or twice. A teacher who loves math could provide some clarity and at least one parent who is willing to work ahead would be a big help.

In conclusion, if enVisionMATH� Common Core for grade 5 is the initial effort of the 13 scholars listed in the forward, then the text deserves a single star for creativity and 4/10 of a star for attempting to cover the subject from so many different directions. Rigourous

For whoever likes the book by Feynman on path integrals, this book is very different. The author gives a much more rigourous
treatment of path integrals than Feynman, especially for the "measure" theory underlying these functionnal integrals. The scope of the book is pretty broad, even though the editor insists that the book is not an ecyclopedia. The author's style is much nicer than other textbooks on this subject like the one by Kleinart. The first 1/4 of the book (5 chapters )constructs the theory and its application to simple cases and its very readable by the amateur ( as myself).

Fine Collateral Resource

This Textbook (my copy: the original 1992 printing Academic Press) is an excellent first exposure to Path Integrals.
For those who intend to specialize in Field Theory, it also makes an excellent preliminary to more involved study.
Chapter One, Mathematical Preliminaries, provides the necessary background of the various tools needed to peruse
the entirety of the book. Exercises are sprinkled throughout: they are straightforward and enhance pedagogic utility.
The following two chapters,comprised of standard material: "deriving" the Path Integral and a qualitative description
of sum over histories, finishing with a nice discussion of topological measure (see Exercise 3.8, Page 71).
A potpourri of applications awaits for the fourth chapter, this including harmonic oscillators, spontaneous symmetry
breaking and constraints. Grassmann Variables presented as clearly as one is likely to find, supersymmetric quantum
mechanics given brief concern here, also. (This chapter, five, a delight to peruse and thus ruminate upon the exercises.)
Field Theory, next. (No "ict", signature of metric is -2 ); the reader works out the properties of Pauli and Gamma Matrices.
Spinors , Helicity, Dirac and Noether precede discussion of Path Integral approach. Accomplished with utmost clarity.
We read: "...unfortunately the validity of the field-theoretic path integral procedure for quantization is even murkier than
its quantum mechanical counterpart."(Page 228). Gauge Field Theory follows--most of the exercises in this chapter are
of the type "verify" such-and-such formula. A nice section on Lie Algebras precedes Yang-Mills Fields and topology---this
including a discussion of differential forms and magnetic monopoles. The last two chapters, Perturbation Theory and
Nonperturbative Results,of more technical ilk---ends with Kinks, Solitons and Instantons. A veritable feast for the mind.
Advanced, but not too abstract.(Of course, depending on your definition of advanced and abstract).
The exercises are additional enrichment, most are not difficult.( Some are trivial--but, that is subjective)
This is an enjoyable text.

A Frenetic Blinding Bending Look into Gaelic Football, Subbing and Sobriety

Don't read this book at 3 am! It will buzz you up to the ceiling and keep you up there - you will NOT get back to sleep! John's story is frenetic, well-written and above all, honest. He is self-deprecating but also knows how good he was as the sub Goal Keeper. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to have been a sub all that time and never to have gotten a game on! (and this for a man who admits to loving the limelight!)
His personality shines through so that this book is not only an inside-the-locker room expose of the Dub's rituals and warm-ups and practices - it's also a mad careening journey into the mind of a man crazied by a pedophile priest in his boyhood and who's been chasing demons since then. The man's heart shines through in this book on football and I'm a person who HATES football of any description, having married a bloke who watched it every night for the 8 years of our "bliss" together.
John managed to keep me rivetted throughout although I got lost on some of the footy jargon. So don't let the apparent content put you off. It really is a read about a guy who went from god-awful benders of self-oblivion to the sober paddy he is today. That journey is not unusual - what's unusual is that a man could be so honest about it. More men should be so honest.
It's a great read - it'll get your pulse racing (if you're a football fan) and it will creep rapidly around your heart like vines so that you praise the gods when he finally meets his wife Serena and sobers up. I can't convey the relief I felt when that happened. A really interesting read.

Good for Newbies and Pros Alike

A nice guide to designing your own fabric to be printed by Spoonflower. The sample projects were very interesting and gave me some great ideas for my projects. The recipe card tea towels are a particularly great idea if you happen to have something written out by a beloved cook in your life. So many derivations from that simple idea have been teeming in my mind. My family had better watch out next Christmas!
As for the instructional quality. I'm a graphic design and prepress professional who has done a fair amount of training newbies over the years. The basic how-tos are detailed enough to get a beginner started without being overwhelming. This is a VERY good thing!
If you've never done graphic design on computers, I suggest supplementing this book with a beginner-level how-to book for the software you happen to be using. (Those "For Dummies" books are a good start.)

an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles

I suppose that i should begin with a few disclosures, as i am hardly an impartial reviewer. I bought the book at the book release party on-site at the Durham production facility. Spoonflower is a local company with offices literally just up the street from my house. I count more than one friend (and one alumna of the graduate program in which i teach) among their employees, and I have been a customer and designer of theirs for years. That said, i don't have any affiliation with this book and its authors beyond being a fan of the text.

So, what's the book like?

One could argue that it is a book-length infomercial for Spoonflower, which i suppose is technically true, in that there's a lot of information about how specifically one can use the company to produce textile designs, wallpaper, and gift wrap (the three products they print). But on a general level, there's an enormous amount of useful information about the basics of print designs--everything from how to use both analog and digital tools to create your designs, to how one might create a seamless repeat in a range of different configurations. The book does touch on some of the more "pro" programs for digital design, but also illustrates techiques and methods that are decidedly low-tech and non-intimdating for those who have no proficiency with, say, Photoshop.

The first section is a sort of overview of textiles and design--discussions of everything from types of fabrics one can print on (knits/wovens, fiber contents) to the definition of digital design terms like raster and vector based image files, hex codes, dpi, and so forth.

The structure of the second half of the book is project-based, with specific how-to craft projects, each of which addresses a different technique or medium. So, an example of a simple project for working with a digital photograph is the Doppelganger Dog Pillow (which involves printing a photo of your pet and making a pillow out of it), whereas a project addressing working with text involves creating a repeat for the Typographic Wrapping Paper.

Overall, it's an excellent book for demystifying digitally-printed textiles (and papers), which will appeal to hobby crafters, fashion designers, costumers, prop artisans, interior decorators, scrapbookers, and sewing enthusiasts. In terms of its specific appeal to theatre professionals, it's a good book to have in your arsenal, though it covers little new ground not already addressed by Kimberly Kight's Field Guide to Fabric Design.

About the Author
Aristotle was born in 384BC. For twenty years he studied at Athens at the Academy of Plato, on whose death in 347 he left, and some time later became tutor to Alexander the Great. On Alexander's succession to the throne of Macedonia in 336, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his school and research institute, the Lyceum. After Alexander's death he was driven out of Athens and fled to Chalcis in Euboea where he died in 322. His writings profoundly affected the whole course of ancient and medieval philosophy.

Good edition of the Greek text with a clear and helpful translation by H. Rackham.

This is a very good edition of the Nicomachean Ethics translated by H. Rackham. The english text (available at Perseus Digital Library) is intended for those who want to read the greek text and use the english as a support, as the english text will often interpret the text and undo many of the obscurities of the original, preserved in more faithful translations as the one of W.D. Ross. For those working with this text I would recomend both Rackham's and Ross's translations.

The greek text is the one of Bekker, revised with the aid of Susemihl (1880), Bywater (1891) and Alpet (1902), and published notes of other scholars (like H.H. Joachim). (The greek text is also available at Perseus.)

Overall, I found this one to be the best edition for scholarly purposes.

As of the book itself - materially - it a is a decent edition. It has a nice binding and a hardcover. The pages are somewhat thin and may get damaged if you just hold the book long enough (especially if you tend to sweat in your hands). The letters are big enough so you can read without difficulty, but you won't have much space in the page to writte comments (unless you can write really small).

The best edition of the Ethics

Still to my mind the best edition and translation of the Ethics. I say this as someone working on his own. Besides the obvious quality of content, the publication is superior: beautifully bound with strong clean paper in a nice sized book that is clear to read.

A good version

Aristotle was for a long time difficult to understand, but I later learned that it was because I had the wrong teachers. Most people I talked to from when I was very young never completely understood it, but they pretended to as a way of justifying certain actions. Among my official professors in university, it turned out that the first only gave me a basic understanding of it, the second had mostly studied new age interpretations, the third gave a repeat of the first, but she had less understanding. When I was finally learning the truth of it from decent university professors, I still wasn't completely certain of what I was learning because of the past confusion, and I wasn't sure where to look for a good translation, as a French translation of Aristotle's works had some bad translation. A former professor who had good knowledge of it recommended this. And now it is all much clearer.

I do not agree with everything that Aristotle wrote and taught, and I have found flaws. But this is a good book to read in order to better understand what he really did say. When a person has problems understanding a professor, others often say to read it yourself, but they often do not give good suggestions of specifically what to read. This is one of the better versions.
