Good career advice book, title and subtitle mostly inapplicable

This book can be useful to people in many careers, not just the career of Web Analyst. That statement might seem odd, considering that the title and subtitle say nothing about the Web Analyst career. So before I talk about where this book excels, let's look at where it has some problems.

The target reader of this book is the Web Analyst who works in a large corporation. Most of the text is devoted to the theme of making your case to executives and other stakeholders, so that action can come from your analysis. Thus, the subtitle should be changed to "How to Be a Successful Analyst in a Corporate Environment."

The current subtitle implies that the book is targeted to the typical small business that can't afford to hire a Web Analyst except maybe on the occasional special project basis. The phrase "your business" does not apply to people who are not business owners.

It makes sense that Dyke, who works for Adobe, would have this big company perspective. For the small business, this book is not appropriate.

The bulk of this book pertains to any technical department head, albeit with the backdrop being the Web Analyst. When I was a plant engineer, I knew some of these principles at the start, but had to learn many of them as I went along. They are universal principles that any technical department head or manager should know and practice (emphasizing "should," here).

What this means is if your job involves interacting with senior management, you can disregard the relatively small part of this book that's about analytics and use this book as a framework for better dealing with your management.

When Dyke strays from the career advice and actually "talks shop" about analytics, there is some good information. But anyone with formal training in analysis already knows this stuff. I'm an MBA and found nothing new here, other than specific examples. Someone who's working as a Web Analyst and doesn't yet know this information is probably in the wrong line of work.

Another problem with this book was it needs proofreading. The text contains numerous gaffes in grammar, along with compositional errors that force the reader into "decipher" mode around strangled syntax and other problems.

I noted I found nothing new in the analysis part. That's the same technical stuff that all MBAs learn, unless they go to really bad schools or don't pay attention. In fact, what Dykes presents about analysis isn't even complete; it leaves out many standard tools and techniques. I think if he wants to write a book on analysis, then he should do that. This is not that book.

If he did write such a book, it would not be merely a rewarming of Google's tutorials on Google Analytics. As good as those tutorial are, they don't teach analysis. They teach how to use the tool itself, the same way an Excel tutorial shows you how to use this or that feature of Excel but not how to create a casino scenario with it or analyze the trend in stock price movements with it. In this book, the reader gets a teasing insight into Dykes' high level of analysis competence. A book that focused on developing this would be most welcome.

The career advice is excellent. I have seen far too many (as in, nearly all) technical folks in all specialties lack the ability to properly articulate the problem, the recommended solution, and the need for action. The standard approach is to hide weak analysis behind jargon. Many even go so far as to totally alienate managers via a condition called Powerpointlessness. This involves convincing people to gather into a room, where they sleep while you drone on and read PowerPoint slides. Why people do this instead of trying to actually communicate, I am not sure. Maybe it's a fear of rejection thing, so they don't even try to communicate.

Something that happens in niche technical areas is the technical experts expend so much effort developing their technical skills that they neglect developing the really important assets that can make them far more effective in their own companies and far more marketable when a recruiter seeks to get them a hefty raise by placing them with another employer. Those are assets such as company contacts (for getting the job done right in your own company), industry contacts (vital to the max), interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and listening skills. And quite often, they have good technical problem solving skills but can't apply them appropriately because they are deaf to context.

Dykes addresses these issues in this book. For the technical expert who reads Dykes' advice and takes it to heart, the book easily pays for itself. That's true whether the reader is a Web Analyst or not.

I hope now it's clear that my problem isn't with the content of the book, but with the marketing of it. The Action Hero part of the title does match the metaphor used throughout, but the book really isn't about Web Analytics. Nor does the subtitle apply to this book. If properly titled and subtitled, this book would deliver on its promise.

This book consists of an introduction and eight chapters spanning 223 pages.

Not for Solos and micros

If you think "your business" means, "the company that you own / control / manage/ depend on," don't buy this book. If, OTOH, "your business" means, "the company that pays your salary," you might find something useful here.

Given that I belong to the first subset and not the second, I found WAAH to be a waste of time.

Hint: If the people in "your business" regularly use the term "stakeholders" to describe other people within your company, you might find this book more helpful than I did. "Stakeholders" is not a term used in the micro world.

Given that most of the intended audience was probably born in the 1980s and doesn't know that Apple ever crumbled, using the quotation from John Sculley as the opening call-out is at best confusing.

Mostly? This is a book about how to be an analyst who happens to focus on web-driven / web-related data, at a company big enough to have executives, a real marketing department, and all the other functions that go into a significant corporation with +-100 or more employees. If your company's revenues are at the very much smaller end of the SBA's "small business" category (which ends at $50M / year, I believe), keep looking.

I make this point twice because i don't think the description of the book provided in the Amazon listing makes it sufficiently clearly.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to become a Web Analytics Action Hero

If you are a web analyst, or are seeking a job as one, you need to read "Web Analytics Action Hero: Using analysis to Gain Insight and Optimize Your Business" by Brent Dykes. In an interesting and engaging format, experienced web analytics consultant, Dykes, addresses topics that analysts and online marketers need to know to move beyond reporting and toward analysis to drive action and change within their businesses.

Did you ever think you would be reading about Indiana Jones when reading about web analytics? In this book you do. That's what made this book more interesting and engaging than many dry business type books. The action hero slant was fun and worked at teaching the lessons the author wanted to make.

Action hero and superhero jargon aside, this book really does address some serious issues regarding analysis, and using the action hero model just makes it easier to remember and identify with. I mean, what computer nerd doesn't dream of being an action hero? So now, you can be an action hero behind the computer screen doing analysis.

The format and layout of the book also makes it easier to read and learn the information presented. There are interesting quotes throughout the text, graphs, charts, and side boxes illustrate key points and continue to make it an interesting read. (As interesting and analysis can get anyway.) Some of the side boxes are Insider Insights that provide tips from top people in the field. Others contain Villain Profiles that illustrate things to watch out for and how to defeat these "villains."

The book will help someone become an analyst, and it will help analysts become better. It describes the best environment for analysts and provides a strategy for executing online analysis with a variety of techniques. I especially liked the call for "Action." Data is fine, but the real reason to analyze data is to provide recommendations to act, and to do so in a way that your recommendations are acted upon.

So, while most of the book focuses on transforming data into business insights, the final chapter looks at what a company can do to be more agile and ready for action. I thought that was a very good way to finish the book. Granted, this book has a limited audience. But for those interested in the analyst field, either to enter it, or become better at it, this book is a great resource. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to become a Web Analytics Action Hero.

An excellent book for anyone interested in the martial arts and Asian warrior philosophy.

I have had the pleasure of reading and reviewing several of Thomas Cleary's other books on (Samurai Wisdom, Soul of the Samurai, Code of the Samurai, The Art of War) Asian warrior philosophies. This volume focuses on the translation of Yamamoto Kansuke's (1501-1561) "Secrets of Japanese Art of Warfare." This book covers the strategy and philosophical principles of winning in battle. There are numerous illustrations (drawings) showing the techniques and strategy one should use during a physical confrontation.

This text is organized into ten parts, but some of them are very short sections. Part one introduces the sources of the arts of warfare and numerous other topics. Part two explains wrestling and boxing forms. Part three teaches the various swordsmanship techniques and tactics. Part four deals with the use of the pole (Stick, staff). The basic use of the "king of weapons" the spear is covered in part five. Part six very briefly covers archery. Part seven mentions the role firearms play in the art of war. Part eight deals with the mind (Human Advantages) and strategies to use in various combat situations. Part nine explains the advantages of terrain and the final part covers the advantages of the sky.

In conclusion, if you are into the martial arts and the Asian philosophy of war you will enjoy this book. Keep in mind that even though there are numerous illustrations, you cannot really learn how to perform the techniques by merely reading this book.

yamamoto kansuke!!! heiho/strategy of the takeda samurai/shinobi

this is a excellent translation of "the school of certain victory" which yamamoto produced many strategy and secret scrolls and densho including the heiho okugisho and the rodanshu

which many claim were main books for the takeda samurai and shinobi (although the sanada ryu shinobi seemed to went on a different path im sure they listened to yamamoto to certain extent as a couple shinobi schools came from this area)

back to the book mr. cleary does a great job of translating putting everything in english even the "fighting parts of the manual" he also adds his own notes which is something the more expensive and harder to find heiho okugisho does not(it stays a tad more traditional) and i have matched them up together that pretty much what this book is with a few adds.

a great buy for any martial artist thats wants more on traditional heiho from a real samurai clan that also employed shinobi no mono. not just samurai ninja troops. hmmm...that word just dont work. but confirmed..samurai from this provice were allowed to learn some ninjutsu. and some of it is in this book. buy it!

Gives an insight of warfare from an actual strategist/warrior.
Nothing "mystical " like those books attributing realistic fighting victories
to metaphysical, zen-like reasons. Down to earth book.

VERY Useful Guide!

Being rather new to the SW DXing, I needed a guide. Most of them were pretty pricey so I decided to give this one a try.

When it arrived, I didn't have a lot of time to review it, just glanced at it and was a little upset. I had expected something with page after page of countries with their frequency listings, much like other guides I'd heard about. This one seemed to have a lot of articles about SWL and only in the back did I find frequency listings.

But the next day I had about an hour to sit and review the book on my Kindle and I discovered how clever Ms. Van Horn had been in her formatting. I realized that the last thing I needed was just a list of frequencies. The gem of the book is the section that divides the day into UTC hours and what frequency in which country is likely to be on the air at that time. After all, what good does it do me to know that Radio Slobovia broadcasts on 1305 if I have no idea of when to listen for them? ( The book also contains a long listing by frequency for identifying those broadcasts that you stumble upon.)

I've looked around the articles towards the beginning of the book and the ones I've read are well written and interesting.

I strongly recommend that the new readers of Ms. Van Horn's guide use the table of contents to skip around and become familiar with the format.

Very useful book at a good price. Ms. Van Horn has herself a new fan :)

Essential reference for SWLs

Gayle knows international SW like few others. She used to write a monthly column and directory in the late, lamented Monitoring Times mag. A big reason why I I subbed to it for years. This guide continues the tradition. The Kindle version is more convenient to use. Now that so many international broadcasters are streaming their programming, Gayle's guide is even more valuable.

Of not use to me

This book was a disappointment to me. Was hoping to find out more about my ancestors who were original settlers to this town. My Great-Great Grandmother and Great-Grandfather were only mentioned in 2 places. One mention was of the cemetery where my Great-Grandfather is buried.. (Already have pictures of the headstones in the Gussettville cemetery. The other mention is of my great-great-grandmother as having receiving a land grant (already have a copy of land grant). I truly though that since she was the only woman of the 12 who received these original grants that there would be more about her in this book. Big disappointment. Might be useful to others but not ne. Sorry I wasted the $50 on this.

Too Much Drivel

To say that Jane and Rob were slow on the uptake as to Seth's value and significance is the understatement of the century. Seth's writings are the most life- changing, important, intelligent, deep and enlightening work since the Bible. They marry spirituality and science in a way that produces understanding for one's daily life. But Jane and Rob didn't know what they had in the beginning and so in Book 9 they try to turn Seth into a past life fortune teller.

His wisdom is found, as it is in all the Seth books scattered throughout. Right off in Book 9 Seth tells them, "Physical illness is not a natural condition." There's more as he advises, "Always trust motion and change over permanency or rigidity." But instead of following up this wisdom with questions that further the thought, Rob will ask a very ignorant question, such as, "What does the larger Seth think of our time system?" I mean, who cares? I can't even begin to think of a way into that answer, and apparently neither can Seth for he ignores it.

There's a lot of interesting stuff about God (All That Is) in this book, although frankly, much of the material here was also published in the small paperback, "The Seth Material." Seth makes a startling comment to the effect that ATI "does not know whether or not others like it may exist." He mentions, as he has other places that Jesus did not exist as he has come down to us through an erroneous history and, of course, Jesus was not "God," for Seth points out the obvious fact that no one entity could possibly hold the essence or vibration that God is. We are ALL God.

Seth emphasises that "Desire, wish and expectation rule all actions, and are the basis for all realities." Now you'd think Rob might want to explore this further, but, alas, just when you most want him to, he has no questions. As for life on Earth, i.e. this reality, Seth tells us, "In your system one of the rules is that you forget you are playing a game in order to concentrate better on the affairs at hand." Wah! I've discovered that once you learn this, there are few to no other people you can share this with. It's a fun fantasy to think of various scenarios that others take seriously in the world and have someone (not me, I'm too chicken) walk up to them, tap them on the shoulder and say, "Hey, relax, it's only a game." Like, the Taliban, or Mitt Romney, or the Sandy Hook parents, or Hurricane Sandy participants, or Anne Hathaway. Of course, it's not that simple. In many places throughout the Seth books, he explains things further and gives reasons why these things have happened.

One answer, and a valuable lesson when you're ready for it, is "the greatest lesson that anyone can learn" and is, "You do not set conditions upon life. This is kin to the meaning of "surrender" taught in AA. If you say, for example, "I'll stop drinking when spring comes," you might just die or end up in the hospital in the middle of winter. And yet you have to balance your understanding of this lesson with another big one that Seth teaches here about who runs your life: "You are in control, you are not moved by other forces."

In Book 9 Seth gives explicit instructions for finding a past life -- but, there is a catch: "The whole exercise, or any part of it, must only be done in order to avail yourself of wisdom." Well, sure. No parlor tricks allowed!

There's some fascinating spiritual history here talking about the "archaic concept of God and the horrors it allowed men to do. For example, "Women were scarcely thought of as human creatures." Yup! I knew it!

There's some really good advice on healing self and others and Seth reminds us that "When you think thoughts of peace and vitality, and when you wish a man well, then you help heal him." Also, "Negative thoughts running rampant do cause infections."

Seth is always worth reading, but unfortunately there is just too much personal, nonessential stuff in this book, especially of other people with endless pages of 'you were a butcher who never learned patience,' and 'your present wife was formerly your mother and that is why you disagree so much.' I mean, there's not really that much psychological correlation that a reader could learn from that. It's mostly boring. To be honest, I felt ripped off paying $25 for this book. You'd think by now someone would have dived into the archives of Jane's work at Yale and brought out a few sensible volumes, minus the Butts notes which remain so distracting and nonessential. Sorry Rob.

The Best Strength Training Journal, Available Today!

While high quality, information packed, strength training magazines are few and far between, nowadays, it is, indeed, refreshing to see that the author has continued to make this publication possible. My friend, Brooks Kubik, author of world famous, “Dinosaur Training: Lost Secrets of Strength and Development”, provides his characteristic no-nonsense, result producing, training information in a quarterly journal. It contains strength training secrets, tips, current events, etc., by the editor and other Iron Game enthusiasts. I always look forward to this, my favorite strength training publication.
