Killing the Rising Sun: How America Vanquished World War II Japan, by Bill O'Reilly, Martin Dugard

The powerful and riveting new book in the multimillion-selling Killing series by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard

No of disc : 8 CD Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes readers to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.

Across the globe in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and his team of scientists are preparing to test the deadliest weapon known to mankind. In Washington, DC, FDR dies in office and Harry Truman ascends to the presidency, only to face the most important political decision in history: whether to use that weapon. And in Tokyo, Emperor Hirohito, who is considered a deity by his subjects, refuses to surrender, despite a massive and mounting death toll. Told in the same page-turning style of Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, Killing Patton, and Killing Reagan, this epic saga details the final moments of World War II like never before.

Review

“An enthralling, gripping account of the bloody battles, huge decisions, and historic personalities that culminated in the decision to drop the atomic bomb and brought the war in the Pacific to its climactic end. A masterful, meticulously researched work that captures the barbarity of the war waged by those who swore allegiance to the Japanese Emperor – and by those who crushed the military might of the Rising Sun.”

– General David H. Petraeus, commander of the surge in Iraq (2007-8) and coalition forces in Afghanistan (2010-2011)

By darby
I have never really known too much about the Pacific theater in WWII. This book educated me, battle by battle, island by island. Politician by politician. This was serious business and I probably should not say this but the Japanese fighting techniques and treatment of prisoners reminded me so much of what we read and see of Isis today. War crimes were the norm. Many pages in the book I could not read, just too intense, violent and depraved. I did not ever really understand that Japan had taken over almost all of the pacific, the Philippines, all the islands and even a large part of china (they were headed for Russia) and also Korea. Americans were dying sometimes 20,000 in a day in one battle. The Japanese took similar casualties once the Americans learned the kind of war that was being fought. Horror after horror.
Some understanding of the men building the atomic bomb...basically some were reluctant but went along and some just plain but brilliant nuts.
Used to have respect for McArthur and some of the other generals, I mean schools are named after them...right? But some were egotistical, did not see their men as anything but expendable numbers and fame and glory was their goal. These did not seem to see one day of battle. BUT, other officers and generals were the opposite, caring for their men, fighting with them and suffering much pain and PTSD symptoms along with their men. A couple that were mentioned even killed themselves 20-25 years after the war for the guilt they carried for not protecting them enough.
I had a better understanding as to why the decision was made to use atomic weapons. The Japanese were given several chances to surrender and continued on. The Japanese people seemed weary of it all but not the soldiers and for sure not their emperor. He had the biggest ego of all. This book was disturbing, and well written and if you read it then you will never view war the same again.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Pacific part of WWII but beware --it is tough stuff to read.

Complexity of the time presented well
By Joseph Elinich
Well worth the read especially if you wish to remember or need to discover how America and Americans can be at their best. Discusses the issues at play that led to the use of the atomic bomb. America has certainly been condemned for doing so now that we know the outcome, however, the complexity of the situation is presented in depth which only underlies the barbarity of the situation on all sides in which the decision was made.

By EDWARD H.
This is an excellent overview. I was glad to see that O'Reilly did not sugar coat the incredible brutality of the Japanese imperial troops and the responsibility of the Emperor for much of this. the efficacy of dropping the atom bombs is well explained. all too many people both young and old at this point forget the atmosphere at the time and the desperate losses we had already taken in the Pacific campaign. many of our anti nuclear protestors would not be here today had Truman had not shown the resolve to drop the bombs. while we are constantly and rightfully so reminded of Nazi atrocities and the holocaust little is said about over a decade of Japanese atrocities. this book says it all.

A definitive and up-to-date handbook of semiconductor devices

Semiconductor devices, the basic components of integrated circuits, are responsible for the rapid growth of the electronics industry over the past fifty years. Because there is a growing need for faster and more complex systems for the information age, existing semiconductor devices are constantly being studied for improvement, and new ones are being continually invented. As a result, a large number of types and variations of devices are available in the literature. The Second Edition of this unique engineering guide continues to be the only available complete collection of semiconductor devices, identifying 74 major devices and more than 200 variations of these devices.

As in the First Edition, the value of this text lies in its comprehensive, yet highly readable presentation and its easy-to-use format, making it suitable for a wide range of audiences.

  • Essential information is presented for a quick, balanced overview
  • Each chapter is designed to cover only one specific device, for easy and focused reference
  • Each device is discussed in detail, always including its history, its structure, its characteristics, and its applications
The Second Edition has been significantly updated with eight new chapters, and the material rearranged to reflect recent developments in the field. As such, it remains an ideal reference source for graduate students who want a quick survey of the field, as well as for practitioners and researchers who need quick access to basic information, and a valuable pragmatic handbook for salespeople, lawyers, and anyone associated with the semiconductor industry.

"...I feel that I?m performing a public service for readers by recommending The Complete Guide to Semiconductor Devices, Second Edition...covers just about anything you?d care to know about semiconductors.... This new edition...is a testament to the endurance of the earlier work." (Chip Scale, March 2003)

"...this book...is an impressive achievement...I would recommend its addition to any university library?s science or engineering reference collection." (E-Streams, Vol. 6, No. 5, May 2003)

"...a useful text and one that should be available in a well-stocked library..." (ChemPhysChem, Vol 4(8), 2003)

Review
"...I feel that I'm performing a public service for readers by recommending 'The Complete Guide to Semiconductor Devices (Second Edition), by Dr. K.K. Ng.
Dr. Ng earned his Ph.D in electrical engineering from Columbia University. Since 1980, he's been a technical manager with Agere Systems (formerly Bell Labs), in Murray Hill, N.J. (The book is published by Wiley Interscience [wiley.com], and is available wherever books of this ilk are sold).
The author is no slouch when it comes to technical publishing either. He's been editor of IEEE Electron Device Letters and is a liaison ot the IEEE Press, so it's a pretty good bet he knows what he's talking about.
Now, I don't know Dr. Ng personally, nor do I get any money for mentioning this book or any other. (I did get the book free to review, though!)
I suspect that Dr. Ng covers just about anything you'd care to know about semiconductors within its 700+ pages. This new edition, which follows the first by eight years, is a testament to the endurance of the earlier work." --Ron Iscoff, Editor, Chip Scale Review Online

comparable to Sze's book
By W Boudville
The book should not be considered a listing of current major semiconductor devices currently for sale. Instead, it describes the theory behind the major types of devices - like a floating gate MOSFET, LED, injection laser, phototransistor, MIM diode.

Also, it explains quantum tunnelling - Fowler-Nordheim and the use of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation for the transmission coefficient. Tunnelling is used in various devices, and the understanding given here will be perfectly adequate for many researchers.

Only about 2 years of undergraduate physics is needed as preparation for the book. Plus some electrical engineering.

The text should be compared to the classic Sze tome, Physics of Semiconductor Devices.

John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963, by Alan Brinkley

The young president who brought vigor and glamour to the White House while he confronted cold war crises abroad and calls for social change at home

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a new kind of president. He redefined how Americans came to see the nation's chief executive. He was forty-three when he was inaugurated in 1961―the youngest man ever elected to the office―and he personified what he called the "New Frontier" as the United States entered the 1960s.

But as Alan Brinkley shows in this incisive and lively assessment, the reality of Kennedy's achievements was much more complex than the legend. His brief presidency encountered significant failures―among them the Bay of Pigs fiasco, which cast its shadow on nearly every national-security decision that followed. But Kennedy also had successes, among them the Cuban Missile Crisis and his belated but powerful stand against segregation.

Kennedy seemed to live on a knife's edge, moving from one crisis to another―Cuba, Laos, Berlin, Vietnam, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. His controversial public life mirrored his hidden private life. He took risks that would seem reckless and even foolhardy when they emerged from secrecy years later.

Kennedy's life, and his violent and sudden death, reshaped our view of the presidency. Brinkley gives us a full picture of the man, his times, and his enduring legacy.

From Booklist
Outstanding for clarity even by the standards of the excellent American Presidents series, Brinkley’s overview of the thirty-fifth chief executive vaults to the head of the pack of basic biographies of its subject because of its thoroughness and evenhandedness. It notes all the most meaningful events and persons in Kennedy’s life and all his most salient characteristics, including his lifelong ill health and obsessive womanizing, both of which Robert Dallek soft-pedals in his John F. Kennedy (2011). Moreover, it states conflicting opinions of Kennedy and his actions throughout, though especially in the piquantly titled last chapter, “The Afterlife of John F. Kennedy.” Brinkley’s own evaluation, implicit rather than open, is admirably middle of the road. JFK was not the liberal hero ardent admirers made of him after his death, nor was he the incompetent detractors make him out to have been. Painfully slow to embrace black civil rights and guilty of embroiling the U.S. in Vietnam, he successfully resolved the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 and initiated real action on nuclear-arms limitation—no mean feats. --Ray Olson

Review
"Plenty of long, definitive works exist, but Brinkley takes his job seriously, filling 160 pages with a thoughtful, opinionated biography."―Kirkus Reviews

JOHN F. KENNEDY: THE LEGACY OF HIS LIFE, TIMES & TUMULTUOUS 1000-DAY PRESIDENCY
By RBSProds
Five EXCELLENT Stars. The latest edition in "The American Presidents Series" is an outstanding, detailed, and sobering historical account by historian Alan Brinkley of the family background, political career, the tumultuous "1000 days", and the historical significance of the 35th President of the USA, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The eloquent unchanging 'boilerplate' "Editor's Note" by Kennedy's 'special assistant', the late Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr is very fitting for this volume. Despite one historian who thought the assassinated Kennedy's short tour of presidential duty would be viewed as a "flicker" in the lineage of presidents, his legacy, as shown in this book, endures in a positive light because of his successes and despite his failures and much unfinished legislative business. This historical analysis gives many interesting facts about his life and times. A sickly child in a large family with a father driven for business success and a mother at times overwhelmed by the nine children, JFK was initially a mediocre student at the Choate prep school, during which time he began the sexual prowess which was evident during his White House years. The author tracks JFK's progress through Choate and Harvard, his WWII naval service, and his political career (with his father, Joe, successfully intervening at key times). Mr. Brinkley does a great job putting the major and minor events of JFK's life in context without unnecessarily dwelling on any topic: the true story of PT 109, meeting Jackie, the Catholicism effect, NIxon's knee, the "fluid Presidency" style, the Republican and southern Democrat House coalition against him, the disastrous "Bay of Pigs" invasion, the US vs USSR Vienna summit, the Cuban missile crisis, the "freedom rides" and the volatile civil rights issue, his lack of legislative success, "Ich bin ein Berliner", the expanding Vietnam war, the infamous Kennedy libido & his many women, Hoover, why Jackie fled a White House reception in tears, the assassination, and his incomplete goals for programs such as civil rights, Medicare, HUD, and the war on poverty. The excellent post-assassination "The Afterlife of John F. Kennedy" chapter details the many reasons for the unusual legacy of this presidency. This overview of the Kennedy life and presidential years is an excellent capsule history, laden with details that may be new even for many of us who lived through those "camelot" days of John F. Kennedy's 35th Presidency of the United States. Highly Recommended. Five INTERESTING Stars! (225 pages ~526 KB. Contains some expletives. A New Biography of John Kennedy
By Robin Friedman
John Kennedy (1917 -- 1963) served as the 35th president from 1961 until his assassination on November 22, 1963. Many baby boomers, including myself, have strong memories of Kennedy; and many people of all ages tend to see his presidency as a watershed moment for the United States. Alan Brinkley offers a sober, thoughtful, and measured account of Kennedy's life and presidency in his new short biography, "John F. Kennedy", the most recent volume in the American Presidents series edited by the late Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Sean Wilentz. Brinkley has written extensively on 20th Century American history; his works include books about the New Deal and American liberalism.

It is difficult to think clearly about Kennedy because of the memories his name evokes, coupled with the assassination and the United States' subsequent political history. During and after his presidency, Kennedy was a highly charismatic, graceful figure who, in the view of many, was taking the United States in a new direction with a sense of mission and purpose. He was dynamic and young. Others, on both the left and right, were less enchanted and more critical. Brinkley is fully aware of the divergent views of our 35th president and he works hard to present a realistic assessment. His book suggests that Kennedy was a gifted but flawed individual who overcame severe health problems on the one hand but who behaved recklessly and carelessly thoughout his life on the other hand, particularly in his sexual relationships with women. Kennedy's presidency, Brinkley argues, would not meet the standards of greatness. Its legislative accomplishments were limited. The failed Bay of Pigs invasion and subsequent clandestine activities in Cuba haunted Kennedy's administration. Yet the president had successes in defusing the Cuban Missile Crisis and in his belated but eloquent support of civil rights.

The Kennedy that emerges from Brinkely's book is a careful, pragmatic politician with a reclusive temperament. He was markedly cool-headed and unemotional. In one of the most perceptive observations in the book, Brinkley writes, "{i[t is one of the many ironies of Kennedy's posthumous image that a man who himself was so uncomfortable with passionate commitment would inspire so much of it in others." The charisma that Kennedy possessed, the devotion of many people to him, and the possibly inevitable falling-off has generally struck me as, on the whole, unfortunate in its impact.

In its short compass, Brinkley's study covers both Kennedy's life and his presidency. Kennedy's wealthy and powerful father was critical in exerting influence and money in Kennedy's early terms in Congress and in the Senate. During these terms, Kennedy showed something of a devil-may-care character with few strong legislative accomplishments to his credit. An indifferent student for most of his life, Kennedy read widely, achieved fame with his historical writing, and won a Pulitzer Prize. Although his father had to exert pressure to allow Kennedy to serve in the military, Kennedy emerged as a war hero for his naval rescue efforts on PT-109.

Kennedy won a close election for president against Richard Nixon in 1960 and proceeded to establish what he termed the "New Frontier" with the still-famous call from his Inaugural Address: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." In successive chapters, Brinkley carefully parses through the major foreign and domestic issues in Kennedy's administration, from the Bay of Pigs Fiasco, to the Cuban Missle Crisis, to Berlin and Laos, to Civil Rights and to the confrontations with business and with U.S. Steel. Brinkely shows a Kennedy impatient with meetings, the Federal bureaucracy, and hierarchy. He governed in a seemingly undisciplined way. Although the term is usually associated with other leaders, the "imperial presidency" was not far from Kennedy's administration. The book shows both Kennedy's accomplishments and his failings. A late chapter of the book covers Kennedy's role in Vietnam. Brinkley shows that Kennedy played a substantial role in American involvement. He declines to speculate on what Kennedy might have done if he had lived. In the final chapter of the book, Brinkley discusses the many theories put foward following Kennedy's assassination. In explaining the continued fascination with Kennedy, Brinkley writes that many people:

"look back nostalgically to an era that seemed to be a time of national confidence and purpose. Kennedy reminds many Americans of an age when it was possible to believe that politics could be harnessed to America's highest aspirations, that it could be rooted in a sense of national community, that it could speak to the country's moral yearnings."

Brinkley offers a careful, restrained look at Kennedy and his influence on the "national imagination". This is one of the better books in the American presidents series. It portrays Kennedy with understanding.

John F. Kennedy's Short Presidency--What Did He Do and What Did It Mean?
By Steven Peterson
This is another nice entry in the American Presidents series, originally edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr and--after his death-[-Sean Wilentz. In this instance, there is some poignancy in that' Schlesinger was an adviser to Kennedy. The books in this series are brief, making information available to readers who do not want massive 600 page biographies. In that, most of the volumes succeed (although I prefer such massive works!!).

The work itself takes a chronological perspective on Kennedy. We learn of his life from birth to death--with an epilogue about Kennedy's reputation and evaluation after his death.

Kennedy grew up with a degree of privilege. His father, Joseph, became wealthy as a financier and parlayed that into an eminent career. When Kennedy became interested in politics, he was well bankrolled.

Before that, we see his childhood and youth--wracked with physical ailments and sometimes fearing for his life. He was an indifferent student in college, although he was obviously quite intelligent. When World War II began, he became commander of a PT boat--PT 109. When the boat was destroyed in combat, Kennedy handled the crisis nicely--a major boost for him as he became politically oriented.

Then, the development of his political career--House of Representatives and then the Senate; his relationship with his future wife Jacqueline Bouvier; his continual womanizing; the trajectory of his career (a potential vice presidential candidate in 1956). In 1960, he contended for the Democratic nomination for President. He succeeded (with considerable support from his father).

We then see the development of his presidency, from miserable failures (the Bay of Pigs) to successes (The Cuban Missile Crisis). He tended to be cautious and did not leave a real legacy of actual success, although many of his initiatives came about under Lyndon Johnson's presidency. There is also a realistic depiction of his role in the development of the US involvement in Vietnam.

Several positive things about this book: it is realistic; it has a critical element to it; it provides a realistic appraisal of his presidency.

All in all, if the reader wants a rather brief biography of JFK, this is a pretty good option to consider.

The English, by Geoffrey Elton

A survey of the English experience through a thousand years and more, this book concentrates on the lasting characteristics of a people who early on discovered the fact of a national identity. The outstanding hallmarks of this experience were the existence of a strong central authority (in the monarchy), the provision of a system of law, and with these two the possibility of preserving individual rights and liberties in the face of a long sequence of historical vicissitudes.

From Library Journal
The increased focus on science is educationally correct, but without the study of history the foundation of all learning is soft. Elton, who taught history at Cambridge, clearly traces the shaping of the English people from barbarian groups to those who came to be called English to the ascendancy of "the mighty British." The book provides a perspective on the grueling development of governing and governance. Though the anglicized spelling may deter some readers, public libraries will find this a viable purchase; it is also a welcome choice for school libraries.

Review
"This book will surely be recognised as the best single-volume concise history of England - lively, authoritative, and yet personal and humane. Only Elton could have written it." Michael Clanchy

"This work is thoughtful, witty, and graceful in style, a marvel of compression ... Elton argues forcefully that the English formed, and were formed by, a unique reconciliation of individual freedom with monarchically supervised order. Like Joseph Strayer's on The Medieval Origins of the Modern State (1986), this splendid work is a brief distillation of a lifetime of thoughtful scholarship and deep reflection." Choice

"Anyone may enjoy this book." The Times

"A study that is both authoritative and individualistic, showing a full awareness but not a full acceptance of recent research." Teaching History

From the Back Cover
During the fifth century following the withdrawal of the Roman military establishment from England, the armed incursions of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and others of the Barbarian tribes from across the North Sea increased, and soon became a surge. After a relatively short time the subjugation of the British was complete and England a patchwork of warring domains and isolated settlements. Yet within the space of two centuries the English (as the tribes may collectively be called) had achieved a sense of themselves that may fairly be described as nationhood. It is the evolution of this sense and of the distinctive characteristics of England and the English that gave it form and substance which Geoffrey Elton traces through twelve centuries. The result is the first one-volume history of the English nation from its origins to the present for over twenty years: it is a tour de force.

Enjoyable, but a little too tightly packed at times
By A. Berke
I will start off by saying that on the whole, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It presents a very nice overview of the English people, paying particular attention to items of political and religious importance. The development of the common law, the history of the relationship between King and Parliament, and the geopolitical involvement of the English are all covered in detail. The author also takes the time to point out in a few instances where other modern authors (mainly ones attached to Marxist thought, it seems) have min-construed some event or writing and tied to it greater significance that it likely deserves.

Additionally, there is a fascinating discussion at the tail end of the book on 'English' versus 'British', in terms of how one could/should think about the people involved at any given time in their history. The discussion, in particular on page 233 and following, cites examples of where it was really the 'British' who did something (such as building a global empire, with the help of Scots, Welsh, and Irish in addition to English - thus, British), while at the same time the English were still a distinct 'people'. As Elton puts it, they were, "...a nationality but not a nation...". I point this section of the book out because it was both something I'd never thought about before, and something that made a lasting impression on me. It is, I admit, rather mundane but having always though of the British as such, to see where distinctions could and should be drawn was enlightening!

I will nitpick just a bit and say that there were times as I read this book that I felt that I needed extra information to really understand the arguments being laid out. I was mildly frustrated at the occasional assumed knowledge, potentially contrary to the claim of 'accessible' highlighted on the back cover. At other times, I felt the text moved too fast and I wanted more information.

It is truly a whirlwind tour of a millennium, and despite my mild frustrations I enjoyed this book and am glad I acquired it!

Finally a ruling class that is also a people?
By Douglas E. Libert
most of the people written about in this series have either vanished or have been absorbed into a larger nation/state but the English are both a people and a country so i realized the author is tackling a big order.Almost as hard for me to review it with anything that sounds sensible. You can't end this book with, they just faded away but we still have their(law or buildings)! So the English were originally a ruling class that developed into a nation so how did they do it?Maybe the question should be asked in another hundred or so years. It would have to be defined from more than "cradle to grave" socialism since about every modern nation is there and i notice how the authors of this series avoid the topic.Since these island territories have strict water boundaries maybe these warrior/farmer bands early decided to either try to get along or if not that then bury the enemy deep or use more moderate yet equally harmful forms of violence to relegate him to obscurity or trivial amusement. An intersting paragraph or 2 on British lawyers and how over the years they fancy themselves as knights defending the barons. Initially though they were more related to the greasy,(sleazy)religious cleric bureaucrats of the Dark Ages who defended the "flock"from the nobles.A little sleaze in defense of the downtrodden, just the thought gave me some from fresh air. Also being an Island nation,it would be easy to become socially, economically and ideologically isolated,a dangerous situation ripe for foreign invasions,so the oceans since prehistoric times are the lifeline.I had heard it mentioned that British zeal at making colonies is an overcompensation for fear of isolation.Elton states the English temperament as "litigous and difficult to rule"and from the read on this book the final tally of who the English are is being continually defined but a close look at political, economic, social, and religiuos movements since prehistoric times show a people not inclined to take a back seat for anyone.there are alot of interesting interpretations in this book. For one,it shed light on the "War Hawk" movement of the early 1800's in the United States. The War Hawks wanted to go to war with Britain in 1812 over numerous issues including the "impressment of sailors to serve on British ships".I always thought this stretched credibility (what there weren't plenty of sailors)?Elton has somewhat cleared this up by reminding me that Britain had abolished the slave trade in 1803 and actively intercepted other ships to search for contraband and slaves.Maybe the "War Hawks" were really upset that the British were interrupting their slave trade and those "impressed sailors" never really impressed the War Hawks at all. This book has alot of these type interpretations which one can misinterpret to his own ends, the mark of a good book!

Shugendo: The Way of the Mountain Monks
By M. Boudrot
SHUGENDO: THE WAY OF THE MOUNTAIN MONKS provides an enticing gateway into the 1,400 year history of Shinbutsu-shugo - it's relevance and revival within our contemporary world. Authored by the 72nd Headmaster (Soke) of the Koryu Shugen Honshu, Shokai Koshikidake, with Martin Faulks, the power of this work originates within authentic, first-hand experience of a Shugenja, rather than the passive perspective of mere academic speculation and theory. As a result, the reader will quickly discover that this is a very approachable and immersive book. Starting from it's insightful Foreword, written by Stephen K. Hayes, the text traces a path of pilgrimage and personal exploration, conveying historical aspects, distinctive clothing, ritual & tools, deities, philosophy, training, methods of enlightenment and Shugendo's relation to martial arts, nature and conservation, replete with color photographs throughout. This long-awaited publication is itself a narrative of tenacity and endurance - indicative of the path of personal trail, knowledge, growth and eventual transcendence realized through Shugendo. A story seventy-two generations in the making.. now openly accessible to you. Here is an informative introduction to the spiritual technology & wisdom from the past, timely and meaningful within the present & vital to the future.

Incredible! This book has a wealth of information, clearly explained. Everything you need to know to make an informed decision as to if this is the path for you. The more you already know, the more you can glean, but even starting from zero this is a solid foundation to build upon and start on this method. Highly recommended.
