A weird collage

A book I wouldn't suggest.
I expected a selection of some texts... but the book is simply a "collage" of quotes organized by the editor... so it's OK if you want to have a general idea of what Paracelsus wrote about... but it's simply a compilation of quotes organized according to different subjects.
It is better purchase the books with COMPLETE texts by Paracelsus or other "selections" that contain some COMPLETE texts and not a somehow random collection of quotes.

As for the book itself, it's a normal book with a good quality... but the contents may be disappointing.

The Little Universe

The main thread of Paracelsus' theology is that man is the "Little Universe" while the Universe is the "Great Being." To Paracelsus, however, this is not just a passing thought or a nice philosophy, but one to be explored, understood, and lived every day.
This selction of works gives a basic overview of Paracelsus' writing and thought in a comprehensive, yet, fairly easy to digest compendium. Edited by Jolande Jocobi for the Princeton "Mythos Series" does a wonderful job splicing together many of Paracelsus' works together in a rather cohesive and streamlined format. The subjects range from the creation of the universe to the practice of the physician to alchemy and art in general. If one is looking for a specific aspect of Paracelsus, this may not be the book to get, however, if one just wants to read or get a trace of his writings, then there is no better book to buy.
The writing is somewhat archaic, however, if one takes the time to understand what is written in the first couple of pages, then one can appreciate the point of view Paracelsus is coming from. In another way of saying this, according to Paracelsus, God and Man are intricately united and there is nothing on this Earth or the Universe that can separate the two. From this understanding Paracelsus stems all his other experiences and revelations.
The introduction by Jacobi is a fairly extensive biography of Phillipus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hoenheim called Paracelsus (which means "beyond celsus"). Throughout the book are many engravings from various artists from his books or other various books that pertain to the topic at hand. As stated, the book offers a wide variety of subjects for the reader to chew from which may make this book limited in range as it is a book of "Selected Writings", however, I believe if one is beginning to look into the works of Paracelsus, this might be the best place to start.

Best Baking Book Out There

The new edition of Wayne Gisslen's Professional Baking is a make-over, and a good one. Obviously pointed towards the advanced amateur more than previous editions, Gisslen's book gives step-by-step instructions that never fail to produce good product. In older editions, the formulae were professionally scaled, making small batches difficult to produce but not impossible. The new edition starts with small batches, and then provides the large batches in the back. I have to say this new edition is an improvement, with big bright pictures, interesting and complex formulae, and down-to-earth instructions most people can handle. If you buy only one baking book, I think this should be the one.

This is THE book for professional bakers!

No professional bakery should be without this comprehensive text. Especially valuable for small retail bakeries.
Few small bakeries will be using more than half of the 700 recipes in this book, but I doubt there are many successful bakers who can continue if they don't at least consult this book when developing new products for their customers.
Wayne Gisslen is one of those few experts than can explain his or her specialty in public and in print.
Whether you want to find good commercial recipes or merely want to understand the fundamentals of good baking, you will find the text to make you a better baker. Home bakers be forewarned, though, scaling of recipes requires care and experimentation before one merely uses simply conversions as the taste changes dramatically when different quantities are used.
Home bakers can benefit from this book, but only if they use wisdom in scaling down.

Be careful, the measurements don't add up.

The second edition is much better. I bought this (3rd) edition for my culinary school baking class while everyone else was still using the 2nd edition. (My class started in October 2000 just as the 3rd edition was being released. I wanted to be on the cutting edge when compared to my fellow students so I bought the then-new book; everyone else had the 2nd editon.)
None of my recipes turned out compared to those using the same recipe in the second edition. Upon closer examination, we found discrepancies in quantities in nearly every recipe over the second edition. For example, many recipes had differing weight values for metric versus imperial measurments. Unfortunately, this wasn't consistant in that metric was "always" higher than imperial. Sometimes the metric measurement was higher (off), and sometimes it was less (still off). Sometimes one tablespoon equalled 28 grams (it should be 15 grams [rounded]) other times 1 ounce equalled 15 grams (it should be 28 grams).
Buy the used 2nd edition to get a quality book. It's acurate, even if there are fewer photos and recipes.
Note: I have many Wayne Gisslen books and I think very highly of him as a culinarian. I think his other books equal five stars. He is a quality author and we're lucky to have him author so many high-value culinarian books. The problem with this particular book is the editing. This had to have been edited by a rookie editor. There is simply no other excuse for such a highly regarded author to publish a book with so many errors sliding by to publication.

Great starter book especially for accountants

The second edition of this book, just published, provides an easy to read introduction to both the standards and the methodology of valuing small and medium size companies. If you have an MBA in Finance from a top 20 B-school, Pratt would be a better read (although he must like reading encyclopedia), but Trugman address the professional concerns and requirements of the professional organizations (AICPA, NACVA, ASA, IBA) and provides hands-on applications and sample reports. I use this as a text book in a course in BV at the graduate level. It does not address large, publicly held corporate valuations, but that is not the niche he desires to address

Well worth the money

I highly recommed this book. It has a lot of valuable information. One chapter gives websites to quickly locate economic, industry, financial, and business information. I have read other book on valuation that put me to sleep. This is not one of those books. If Mr. Trugman wrote the tax code, people would actually read it and find it interesting. He has an effective way of showing you how to apply the information to real life situations. If you want to understand business valuation from an expert, this is a must.

Understanding Business Valuation is a core valuation book for practitioners and students of BV.

Gary Trugman's Understanding Business Valuation is perhaps not only the very best starter book on the subject of valuing small and medium sized businesses, but it is also a standard reference work that seasoned valuation practitioners will find useful. Trugman also happens to be a superb teacher and presenter of valuation subjects, and this book features the same depth of research, insight, thoroughness, clarity, and good humor that characterize his approach to teaching. I have a substantial library of excellent valuation books that I regularly refer to, including books by Shannon Pratt, Alina Niculita, et al.; James Hitchner et al.; Robert F. Reilly and Robert P. Schweihs; Aswath Damodaran; Christopher Mercer; Tom Copeland et al.; Jay Abrams; Mark Zyla; Jay Fishman; Chris Mellen and Frank Evans; and Stephen Penman, among others). I think Trugman's book clearly qualifies as a core valuation reference text, and I unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone seeking to do what the title indicates: i.e., to understand business valuation.

"The [trial] [c]ourt relies primarily upon the expert testimony of Gary Trugman as supplemented by [defendant's valuation expert] in [reaching its] conclusion. Current but balanced; beautifully illustrated; technical detail with strong story lines

This work is intended as a college textbook, and so perhaps not the best choice for a general audience. For readers primarily looking for a highly credible, accessible, and well-written overview of evolutionary theory, I'd recommend Zimmer's earlier Evolution: The Triumph of an Idea or his The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution. Likewise, if you're not sure why evolutionary theory is established and respected science, and so you want the case against the "controversy," I would bump Jerry Coyne's Why Evolution Is True to the top of the list.

As a college textbook, however, Evolution: Making Sense of Life succeeds wonderfully in the following aspects.

The science it presents is both current and balanced. Recent work - and controversies - in the field are covered. But the text makes clear what has been widely accepted as valid science. What is new and promising, and seems well on its way to becoming valid, established science. And what is currently speculative or highly contentious. Both Douglas J. Emlen, the scientist, and Carl Zimmer, the science writer, do their best to avoid bias. And unlike too much of popular science writing, Evolution: Making Sense of Life is free of rant, polemic, and grandiose speculation.

The text is beautifully and extensively illustrated. The graphical representations of data and processes actually make sense. Colorful, accessible, coherent. The other images - including numerous photos - have been carefully chosen for content and context. And many of images are simply beautiful. For the visual display of information alone, this text is a winner.

The writing itself seems to me about as good as one gets for a college textbook. The authors use story-lines to introduce key concepts and developments. Their examples are well-chosen. Once the first two chapters are cleared, "The Virus and Whale: How Scientists Study Evolution" and "Biology: From Natural Philosophy to Darwin", the authors begin introducing more technical information and detail. This doesn't become a problem, however, because in each chapter the general concepts and context are established first. Likewise, the overall organization of the book is well thought-out and executed. All in all, a solid testimony to Zimmer's exemplary skill as a science writer - as well as no doubt Emlen's own considerable abilities to organize and present information. (I know Zimmer's work; Emlen is new to me).

Because I found Evolution: Making Sense of Life so well done in both the details and overall, I'm hoping it becomes a standard text for undergraduates - and perhaps even advanced high school students.

If you're someone who enjoys science writing, and perhaps have already read Zimmer's other work, Coyne's book, that of Dawkins, Shubin, Carroll, and others, you might want to consider adding Evolution: Making Sense of Life to your personal library anyway - the price being the primary objection. Unlike many popular science explanations of evolutionary theory, Zimmer and Emlen here provide a comprehensive general overview while avoiding taking sides in current debates, or making grandiose claims beyond what the current science supports. It's also always good to know some of basic quantitative thinking involved with evolutionary theory, including the basic models for population genetics. Here Zimmer and Emlen do a great job in translating the mathematical logic - daunting for many people - into more familiar concepts.

Bottom line: Evolution: Making Sense of Life is both a pleasure to read and look at, and may well set the new standard for a introductory college textbook in evolutionary biology.

Best book ever

I am grateful and thankful Professor Lahti switches to this textbook (2012) in this semester (Fall 2016). I was reading the other textbook which is also nice but not as enjoyable as this one. The truth is that the subject of evolution is not an easy task for an ESL, especially someone has ADD. And yet authors put so much effort on using simple English and ample of examples to illustrate the mathematical models (in boxes) which I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Although some of the chapters I have to reread two to three times or spend days to grab the ideas, I do learn many statistical models and genetic concepts which I only have some basic knowledge. One thing I have to mention. It seems like authors really like fry. Whenever he mentions about fishes, he is always talking about fry which make me very hungry :)

BTW, make sure if you purchase a second handbook don't choose Amazon Marketplace, there is a 6 to 7 inches cut on the back of the book. I wrote them feedback of it, they have no response whatsoever.

    If you're going to pick one book to introduce you to ServiceNow, I recommend this one. Tim breaks complex technical topics down into straightforward, easy-to-read language. Although prior JavaScript knowledge is recommended, I am sure developers at all experience levels, system administrators, engagement managers, trainers, and anyone else charged with planning, implementing and maintaining the ServiceNow platform will gain invaluable knowledge by reading this book.

    I found this book through Tim's 'SN Pro Tips' site, where his explanation of the 'updateMultiple' function has already allowed me to improve the efficiency of the code I write for clients. I highly recommend any of Tim's writings for anyone looking to gain or build understanding of the ServiceNow platform.

    Great ServiceNow Book for Beginners and Experts Alike

    If you're looking to improve you skills with ServiceNow, or starting from scratch, Tim Woodruff's new Learning ServiceNow is the book to get started. He starts off with introducing the reader to the interface and moves onto how lists and forms work within the system, UI customization, tasks and workflows, user system and security, and a ton of other subject matter. And for those looking to learn about the ServiceNow API, there's a wealth of information on server and client-side API.

    To make navigation easier for new ServiceNow users, plenty of screenshots are provided. The book starts out easy and gets increasingly more complex rather than jumping around like many other authors do. A nice little addition is the Pro Tips chapter where Mr. Woodruff provides some tips and tricks, shortcuts, and other functions that aren't documented in many places.

    There are only a couple of good ServiceNow books available. This happens to be one of them. The book is a nice 300+ pages and has a lot of information packed in. This is one I definitely suggest if you want to improve your skills and start making more money.

    Excellent book for beginners.

    Was recommended to me as a great place to start out, so I bought the book and worked through it in merely a couple weeks and the advice provided was excellent. Moved on to all-natural, organic soapmaking to combine with the natural botanical personal care line we already have. Though most I already knew and I had an advantage with the existing skills and experiences, if I had tried to wing it on my own without this book, I likely would still be toiling away, making dopey mistakes instead of making beautiful all-natural cold-process soaps in only a couple weeks after starting out!

    I have read this book cover to cover and I love it.
    It truly is the Everything Soap Making Book.
    If you are considering becoming a soap maker then this is your book.
    It will teach you everything you need to get started.
    It also talks about the business side of soap making.
    Just in case you want to make soap making a business,
    You can't fail with this book.

    Excellent overview for the beginner soapmaker.

    This is a fairly comprehensive book on soapmaking, including cold process, hot process (crockpot), liquid and cream soapmaking.

    I've been making cold process for about a year now, and have already experimented with many of the recipes and swirling techniques. Grosso provides a great overview, but the lack of pictures in the book seems odd. Also, personal quibble: I was surprised to see sections devoted to acne soap and "oily skin" soap in a book which encourages soapmakers to sell. Unless you submit your soap for testing, you can never put a claim on soap saying that it cures or treats a medical condition -- making claims turns your soap into a drug, and I imagine most home-based soapmakers aren't ready to jump through that labeling hoop.

    I purchased this book for its section on cream soap (and to a certain extent, liquid soap) -- I haven't yet made up a batch, but I found the directions and explanations to be clear and easy to follow. Just for those chapters, I'm happy to have this book in my library.

    The main reason why this is not a five-star review is for the lack of pictures or even diagrams -- some of these techniques are visual and it seems odd to not even have line drawings.
