Developing Thoughtful Assessment

In this book, Marzano begins to refine an assessment model that ten years later has become widely embraced in the profession. Because he is basing it on his Dimensions of Learning model, it is unbelievably complex--that is, unbelievable to the classroom educator he hopes will use it to painstakingly analyze the multiple components of learning articulated by the model.
As an exercise in developing the concept of performance assessment and challenging the prevailing use of concrete tasks to infer learning, it was groundbreaking. Published by ASCD, the ranking organ for teacher practitioner literature, it joined the canon. However, in the meantime there have been three editions to texts by Richard Stiggins (Student-involved classroom assessment) and Vicky Spandel (Creating writers through Six-Trait Writing assessment and instruction)as well as many volumes and articles praising the use of rubrics to articulate specific learning targets.
Ultimately they are focused on process skills rather than 'factoid' content mastery, and so are developmental: they acknowledge the progress from exploring and emerging to developing on to fluent or experienced expression. The indicators for each level of progress are used to probe, clarify, elaborate, redirect, and support student thought.
Thus, Marzano's mission to use assessment as a vehicle for instruction is served. The philosophical commitment to 'lifelong learning' is underscored by the emphasis on continuous improvement and gradual change. These are timeless issues.
However, the writing predates No Child Left Behind, and while it was timely for response to the wave of reforms cresting a decade ago, it is now lacking in the context of classroom teachers inundated by accountability mandates to spend most instructional time on 'drill and kill' preparation for standardized tests.

When assessing habits of the mind within the context of conducting program evaluations, "Assessing Student Outcomes" provides an invaluable source of information about the dimensions of learning model as well as rubrics for the aforementioned assessment. This debut novel follows the gritty, outspoken Taylor Greer, who leaves her native Kentucky to head west. She becomes mother to an abandoned baby and, when her jalopy dies in Tucson, is forced to work in a tire garage and to room with a young, battered divorcee who also has a little girl. With sisterly counsel and personal honesty, the two face their painful lot (told in ponderous detail). The blue-collar setting, described vibrantly, often turns violent, with baby beatings, street brawls, and drug busts. Despite the hurt and rage, themes of love and nurturing emerge. Tender and healing

Barbara Kingsolver is an amazing writer. I have loved some of her books and been unable to read some, so I never can approach her knowing what is coming. This book along with "Pigs in Heaven" is one of my favorites. She loves and respects the characters and even the landscape becomes a living part of the story. There is a great tenderness among these people. There is a villain in the background but we are never introduced to him, only to the pain he has caused, and one damaged ex. Everyone else is just a decent human trying to make his or her way. BTW, there is an audio version of this which reminded me just how much I loved it, which is why I bought a new copy of the book.

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver

This cleverly written, engrossing tale of Marietta/Taylor Greer's escape from her birthplace in Kentucky, and what eventually happens to her in Arizona.
The story (and it's a good story) is about family, friendship and our responsibilities as people.
To give an example of Kingsolver's style (of which I have long been a fan) her description of Taylor's first stop, a bar in Oklahoma:
"..and the black grease on the back of the stove looked like it had been there since the Dawn of Man. The air in there was so hot and stale it felt like I had to breathe it twice to get any oxygen out of it." - p. 21

At this point Taylor is 'given' an Indian baby girl - whom she callsTurtle.

And this, a description of the house she ends up sharing with Lou Ann and her baby Dwayne Rae:
"The house was old and roomy, there was plenty of space for Turtle's bed in my room. It was the type of house they called a "rambling bungalow" (the term reminded me somehow of Elvis Presley movies) with wainscoting and steam radiators and about fifty coats of paint on the door frames..." - p. 191

SPOILER ALERT!

Taylor has a job, and gets to know two Guatemalan refugees who are being helped by Mattie, Taylor's boss. Now Taylor is starting to understand the sort of problems other people face, and so when she decides to try to sort out her own legal standing with Turtle, she volunteers to take Estevan and Esperanza with her.

This scene where the Guatemalans are posing as Turtle's natural parents, giving Taylor permission to adopt her, was heart-wrenching:
"Esperanza...held her against her chest, rocking back and forth for a very long time with her eyes squeezed shut...the rest of us watched... Here was a mother and her daughter, nothing less. A mother and child - in a world that could barely be bothered with mothers and children - who were going to be taken apart. Everybody believed it." - p. 291

Reminds me of high school

I read this for high school and remembered this for it's language and it's protagonist leaving one life for another. Now, I decided to read this again, just for the sake of reading. The characters were what set me up to be interested in this story again. Taylor, sarcastic and deadpan, is the star of the book. Her narration reminds me of a high school girl and her trials and tribulations of raising a Native American girl (named Turtle) is the prime reason to read this book. The supporting characters do their job well. Lou Ann Ruiz is a divorce reconstructing her life when she meets Taylor, Mattie is the boss of a mechanics that specializes in tires that Taylor works at, and a couple later joins the cast as well (forgive me for not knowing their names, I have not gotten there yet.) The story isn't perfect, though. As much as I should know about their pasts, I felt that men got the short end of the stick, but I haven't fully read the book yet, so I might not know. Another is in later in the book. I won't spoil it, but it left me with a small taste that made me shudder. If you like books that have a spunky female lead that takes place in the past, give it a read.

Concise and easy to understand.The book provides overview on big data and analytics that successfully used in both private and government sectors.The author easily explains how big data and analytics are used in various different ways.It is very helpful for anyone who is looking for solution to solve big data problems. This book is not about technology of big data. analytics or any type of predictive models it is about how organizations wisely use big data to deliver value for their businesses.

Great real world insights on big data

This book provided great insights into how big data is applied across many industries. Its easy to read and each page confirms to a standardised template making it simple to use as a reference book.

I would recommend this book to those new to big data as an initial starting point to its many applications. This book is otherwise to light on information to those that already have hands on experience and wants to dig deeper.

Great high level summaries, but very little detail

If you're looking for a very simple overview of how big data is being put to use then this is the right book. I was hoping for more details than were available in this particular volume. The stories are high level summaries that take between 5-10 minutes each to read. This is great if all you're looking for is anecdotal information about big data so you can talk to others about the topic. If you're looking to truly learn about big data and the technology that helps us take advantage of it I think you'd need to find another book.

Given the cost of the book I'm surprised at the content inside of it. It is definitely not worth 30 dollars. If you're fortunate enough to have a work subscription to something like Safari Books etc. check that out, it might be included free.

About the Author
Professor emeritus of operations research at Stanford University. Dr. Hillier is especially known for his classic, award-winning text, Introduction to Operations Research, co-authored with the late Gerald J. Lieberman, which has been translated into well over a dozen languages and is currently in its 8th edition. The 6th edition won honorable mention for the 1995 Lanchester Prize (best English-language publication of any kind in the field) and Dr. Hillier also was awarded the 2004 INFORMS Expository Writing Award for the 8th edition. His other books include The Evaluation of Risky Interrelated Investments, Queueing Tables and Graphs, Introduction to Stochastic Models in Operations Research, and Introduction to Mathematical Programming. He received his BS in industrial engineering and doctorate specializing in operations research and management science from Stanford University. The winner of many awards in high school and college for writing, mathematics, debate, and music, he ranked first in his undergraduate engineering class and was awarded three national fellowships (National Science Foundation, Tau Beta Pi, and Danforth) for graduate study. Dr. Hillier’s research has extended into a variety of areas, including integer programming, queueing theory and its application, statistical quality control, and production and operations management. He also has won a major prize for research in capital budgeting.

Associate professor of quantitative methods at the School of Business at the University of Washington. Dr. Hillier received his BS in engineering (plus a concentration in computer science) from Swarthmore College, and he received his MS with distinction in operations research and PhD in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University. As an undergraduate, he won the McCabe Award for ranking first in his engineering class, won election to Phi Beta Kappa based on his work in mathematics, set school records on the men’s swim team, and was awarded two national fellowships (National Science Foundation and Tau Beta Pi) for graduate study. During that time, he also developed a comprehensive software tutorial package, OR Courseware, for the Hillier-Lieberman textbook, Introduction to Operations Research. As a graduate student, he taught a PhD-level seminar in operations management at Stanford and won a national prize for work based on his PhD dissertation. At the University of Washington, he currently teaches courses in management science and spreadsheet modeling.

Simplifies a potentially devastatingly confusing subject!

This is, hands down, the best textbook I have ever used! I suck at math and I hate math. I have been dreading taking this course my entire degree, but thankfully we are using this textbook. It teaches from a management perspective, so the focus is shifted to the use of Excel and other technology which handles the complex formulas for you. Although the mathematical rationale and methods behind the calculations are introduced, it is kept to a "need to know" basis, unlike other textbooks I have seen where the author can't seem to help themselves from going into a "look how many formulas I can spout!" tangent which totally throws me off course. Also, the chapters use a "storytelling" method of teaching which is incredibly helpful and keeps a potentially painfully dry subject from getting dull. One or several case studies are introduced complete with background, dialogue, and a conversational writing tone which makes it easy to follow and see how the subject could be useful in your line of work. I am doing surprisingly well in a class I was certain I would "barely pass" and I truly think this textbook is the reason! :)

This textbook was required for my college class. Our class focused mostly on using Microsoft Excel through each chapter. I learned a ton from this book and would highly recommend it even if you're not in college. The only thing I disliked is that the publisher did not use color inside the text which would have been very helpful when viewing the numerous spreadsheet examples that require special formatting, including color coding.

I gave 5-stars based only on content. The price is way too high and for that I would give a lower rating!

This book was required for a course and was one of the few that I kept since it provided very clear explanations. Most examples are shown using Excel with plugins. However, you could apply the same methods using your chosen tool (SaS, R, Python) since this book does a great job of explaining how to set up a problem and use a tool to help you solve the problem.

If you're looking to get more into the weeds of Operations Research, this may not be your book unless you need a gentle introduction and your'e at the beginning of it all. I would recommend Winston's book if you want to dig more into OR.

I am not a recruiter. I am a software engineer. And as such, I know what it's like to be asked to whip up brilliant algorithms on the spot, and then write flawless code on a whiteboard. I know because I've been asked to do the same thing--in interviews at Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, among other companies.

I also know because I've been on the other side of the table, asking candidates to do this. A 'Must-study' before taking a Tech Interview

If you are planning to appear for a technical interview at any big software-firm, I highly recommend studying this book.

When I started my preparation, the entire process seemed really daunting. There is so much to study, and there is vast amount of study-material available out there. I was really confused on what/how to prepare. A friend of mine suggested me this book and so I read it.

To summarize, this book is an awesome compilation of problems, strategies and approaches you must know for doing well in a Tech interview.

It starts with chapters focusing on non-coding aspects (company-info, resume, behavioral etc.). I feel that, thoroughly covering just these first 30 pages is suffice for doing well in the 'HR' parts of tech-interviews.

After that, it contains 150 questions grouped by categories, covering all the relevant areas. And finally it has useful information, solutions and discussions for all the questions.

Qu. "If I memorize solutions for all these questions, Can I crack an Interview?" Ans. No Way!
Rather, if you slog through these questions, learning techniques; I am sure you will be able to solve questions on that day.

Solving problems through the book, I learnt different [ingenious] approaches. And with practice, I was be able to [/tried to] identify patterns in new questions that I faced.

I particularly love 3 chapters- "Recursion", "Moderate Interview Problems", "Hard Interview Problems". Because they contain some really neat algorithms :)

Great practice.

These are must-solves for the tech prepper. Perhaps basic for experienced engineers, but perfect for my purposes.

There are some inaccuracies, but nothing too awful. Complexity analysis can be lacking.
