Coe's story of the early New World civilizations and their encounters with Europeans is extraordinarily readable, interwoven with descriptions of food, how it was prepared and served, its significance to the people who ate it. About the Author
Sophie D. Coe (1933-1994) held a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University. She researched and written extensively on the cuisines of native Latin America.

the history of my favorite foods!

This book is one of my favorites in recent years. I have become interested in the history of foods and Sophie Coe was an incredible scholar. Her books are great reading and amusing. Unfortunately she is no longer with us but she has left us with two wonderful books on the foods of the Americas (The True History of Chocolate--finished by her husband Michael Coe, another great writer of history. I highly reccommend this one as well).

What the Indians Ate

The list of food products discovered or created by the American Indians seems endless: corn, manioc (cassava, yuka, or tapioca) squash, beans, chocolate, tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, pineapples, avocados, vanilla, and chile peppers -- plus for your Thanksgiving table, turkey, and for your wicked moments, tobacco, coca, and magic mushrooms. Conversely, there's been very little written about pre-Columbian cusine. Coe's book fills this lacunae.

The Spanish destroyed every aspect of Indian culture they could but enough accounts of Indian food were recorded to partially construct what they ate. Coe focuses on the food of the three main civilizations in the Americas at the time of Columbus: the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas. A lot more information survived about the food of the Aztecs than the other two.

Working with fragmentary information Coe has reconstructed the cuisines of these civilizations -- and rich indeed were the foods they ate -- dozens of variations of tortillas and tamales, a heavy reliance on chiles, innumerable varieties of potatoes, and a huge variety of chocolate dishes that seem ripe for the exploration by culinary adventurers, entrepreneurs, and writers of cook books. The notion, often advanced, that the pre-Columbian diet was boring, primitive, or deficient is refuted persuasively here.

The book suffers a bit from being an overly broad summary that left me hungry (groan!!!) for more information about many foods only barely mentioned. There's plenty of material here for additional books and questions to be answered. To echo an earlier reviewer: what did the Italians eat before the tomato amd the Irish before the potato?

Interesting Historical Book On Mayan, Incan, and Aztec Cuisine

I was able to read this book steadily from beginning to end, which is unusual for me with a book of historical nature. So often such books are dry recitals of names and dates, interspersed with quotes from a myriad of past authors which sometimes seem to my way of thinking to be almost randomly placed in the text in order to have it be said they were quoted. This book does include quotes with their sources, but they support the text rather than supplant it. The information that I wanted to learn is presented in an orderly fashion, for each of the three cultures. The supporting quotes appear in their appropriate places along with the author's opinion of their possible biases. The text includes factual descriptions that excite the imagination without actually entering the realm of fiction. At the end of the book I felt satisfied. I feel no need to seek another book on this subject. This book also gave me enough general background on cultural cuisines to enable me to evaluate similar books about other ancient cultures. I guess in summary I would have to say that by my perception this author wants to engage the reader's interest in a subject about which she is enthusiastic, and teach the reader accurately what can be learned on that subject. In my case, her book succeeded admirably at both things.

This is one of the more perfect books I've read on the prickly issue of marital ...

This is one of the more perfect books I've read on the prickly issue of marital intimacy. It's a great companion to Laura Brotherson's "And They Were Not Ashamed." While Brotherson's book tackles the hows of communication and sexual relations, Busby's book answers more of the whats and whys. The authors provide some great background into why we approach sex the way we do and why that doesn't necessarily work.
Personally, this book left me feeling happier and more hopeful for my marriage than any other. The authors have a slightly more researched approach to the topic than other books -- which makes it easy when asking my wonderful wife to consider giving it a read. I'm surprised it hasn't received more reviews. It has left me not only thinking my future will be happier, but it's also made me realize I'm not lost as well. Their perspective of recognizing and working with our divine sexual nature works perfectly against the tawdry advice given by other, more world-bound experts. It's a great read.

This is the best book on this topic I have ever seen.

It is balanced, articulate, thoughtful, insightful, and long overdue. This will give an individual/couple the tools needed to properly navigate the landscape of sexuality in marriage. It certainly frames things in a perspective that even 30 year veterans can learn from. It empowers parents with confidence to teach their children on what can be a delicate and sensitive topic. The emotional and spiritual components are woven together with the physical aspects that are sorely missing in today's literature. It is a must for ecclesiastical leaders. Five stars does not do it justice.

About the Author

Dr. Martha Snell is a Professor Emeritus of Special Education in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia where she directed the teacher preparation program in severe disabilities for 37 years. With others, she has authored a number of books on teaching methods and the definition of intellectual disability. She has been active in a number of professional organizations, in particular: TASH and the American Association for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. She has directed both federal and state grants directed toward research and the preparation of teachers. Her research has addressed primarily individuals with autism and intellectual disability and their teachers, but more recently has included Head Start classrooms and young children at risk; research topics have encompassed the inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classrooms, effective teaching strategies, intervention with communication, and positive behavior support for problem behavior.

 

Dr. Fredda Brown is Professor in the Programs in Special Education at Queens College, City University of New York.  In addition to Dr. Brown’s work as a Professor and teacher educator, she has spent many years providing educational and behavioral consultation to individuals with severe disabilities and their families.  She has co-edited several books, and has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters relating to the education of individuals with severe disabilities.  Most recently her work focuses on professional attitudes regarding behavioral treatment acceptability. Dr. Brown is past Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities (RPSD), and currently serves on several Editorial Boards, including the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions (JPBI), and RPSD.  She has sat on the National Board of Directors of the Association for Positive Behavior Supports (APBS) and TASH. She presents her work and ideas nationwide to professionals and families, advocating for positive, dignified and effective methods of addressing the learning and behavioral needs of individuals with disabilities.

 

Dr. John McDonnell is a Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Utah. His research is focused on curriculum and instruction, inclusive education, and transition programs for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His obtained a number of state and federal research, model development, and outreach grants to support his work in these areas. He has co-authored five textbooks and he published numerous journal articles and book chapters focused effective educational services for students with severe disabilities. He serves on the editorial boards of several of the top journals in special education including Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities, Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, and The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Crazy Twisted story of betrayal, lust, and uncertainty

Are you ready for some twisted goodness? This book will take you on a voyage of erotic and sensual missions, that you didn't think you could even enjoy! Prep yourself for a good time with Alexa and Scott, with a side of Brett!

So there was a lot of hot steamy sex in this book. Like tons. Probably more than I needed for me to enjoy Alexa and Scott's story. But it's what really made these two who they are. And what kills me the most about Alexa and Scott, was their back story. Never saw that coming. BAM! Yeh, knocked me off kilter. So needless to say, I was impressed with these two. They're smokin' together, but when they're apart it's like cutting the tension with a dull knife! Then throw in the added hottness of Brett and HOLY CRAPOLA!

This story just took a turn for the did not expect that scenario! You are about to venture into a lot of breathless, tummy flipping, and what the hay moments. Scott and Brett are both incredibly hot, and both are vying for the attention of Alexa. Hot diggity!!! I think I wanted to devour both of these men, in their hot pursuit to Alexa's heart. Who has the power to conceal her heart forever?

Ok after all the drool fest that I just encountered, I best get back onto Alexa. That girl has a great head on her shoulders. She is a go getter, and by golly won't let any of these dudes drag her down. But one thing lacking from this ice queen is happiness. Can either of these drool-a-licious men fix her broken heart? Or will she throw them to the waste-side and continue her journey in life unhappy?

So Author Jennifer Domenico did it again. She wrote a book I enjoyed. This was a very tantalizing tale of love and betrayal. Like holy cow....Girl you know how to write the naughty! And by naughty, I mean don't let your momma's read this stuff!! I may or may not have blushed while reading...ok I had some moments! Beautifully Twisted is just that, beautifully twisted beyond repair! Those characters are going to rock your world!! I give this book 4 Stars.

Panty-Melting erotic fun

Hot, Hotter, Holy burning up the pages is how I would describe this book!

Alexa Drake is strong, confident and schmexy, or is she? She runs the London office at Patrick Collins Media, the way Jennifer Domenico describes the way the staff interacts with her reminded me of Sandra Bullock in The Proposal. You know where they all turn and run, IM-ing each other that she is in the office. She is commanding and seems like she is in control, however not where Scott Patrick (SP) is concerned. He is the only man to make her to go her knees, literally.

Scott Patrick is dominant, sexy, funny, and sometimes just a complete @ $ $. He doesn't believe in love, but if anyone is going to change that it's Lexi. He takes Lexi as his sub and agrees to show her how to become successful in business, what he doesn't count on is how he will feel once it is time to let her go. He goes to London to see her, and try to win her back, but Alexa is going to do everything in her power to not allow Scotty back in her heart.

If they didn't have enough drama though, SP's best friend and co-owner of their agency sets his sights on the gorgeous Lexi. Brett is the complete polar opposite of Scott in every single way! Scott is dominating and Brett is kind and gentle, and poor Alexa is caught in this game. My heart breaks for her, because as strong as she is, she is completely devistated by how Scott ended their relationship. Trust is not something she has with almost anyone, and she basically shut down all of her emotions to keep herself safe.

Alexa and Scott are both damaged, they battle quite a bit and she is often raging her own war in her head. The sexual desire to be submissive, but the fact is that in her business world she is dominant. Scott is her one weakness and has the ultimate power to break her completely. The s e x and fore-play is very descriptive, and completely provocative. I personally loved the verbal sparing most.

"Poor Scotty, you just can't stand that you don't have as much power over me as you used to. It's killing you, isn't it?"

There are a lot of twists, turns and some Oh my what moments. It is definitely not your typical love story, but what a story it is. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Thoroughly enjoyed- couldn't put it down

The cover is not as intriguing as it could be, but the story was absolutely great. Honestly I am not a fan of past tense in stories, I usually hate it, however, in this book it was done tastefully and not so often it was overbearing. The important scenes were covered and nicely placed throughout the story. Even though I usually hate the idea of a male sub, I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author captured his role as a sub and his ability to switch back into a dominant male role, it was beautifully done. I enjoyed Patricks character, kinda was frustrated with him- in a couple of scenes, but he was a redemable character. He was dominant and not overly done- thank God, we can only take so many overly-played dominants. I loved how he was persistant to prove his love to Alexa. I enjoyed the book and thought it was beautifully written given the content, I could not put it down.
