Amazing game development course!

I think the title is wrong, this isn't just a programming book, this is a complete game development course, the author starts by talking about what you will have at the end, them he introduces every game talking about the foundations not just code and result, you are introduced to good practices to achieve your game complete, it is fundamental in my opinion to have a project complete, the programming part is really good as he is presenting the critical points of the game structure in natural basis, you understand what he does because you understand the need of that code part. I think that the difficult of this book is between intermediate to advanced, but he made a book that everyone who wants to make a mobile game can start with solid basis. All the projects has its own focus and difficult level, I think they shown almost every feature you need to make a good 2d mobile game.

Simply Amazing

Fantastic book and i would give 10 stars if possible! i have to disagree with another review i have seen about the book not being useful to developers at beginner level, although the book intro does assume you have some development knowledge it all depends on what you are looking to take from this book! i am practically new to android game development and needed to know more on game loops and sprites and i got this know how by reading this book and putting it to practice with the games made in this book so even from a beginners point of view i have to say that what i have took from this book has been a massive help towards my understanding of what it takes to get games built and running! java code in any book anywhere can seem daunting to all of us but by using examples i find it is the best method and by example is exactly what this book shows, if you still do not get whats happening in code then simply go over it again as with everything in life, things become clearer the more you practice.
Before i read and used the examples in this book i was at a stand still with my games development and was annoyed with my self as was trying to take so much information in from a number of different sources it was really taking a toll on me but when i came accross this book it ticked all the right boxes and i am glad i gave my time to read this as all this time it was one source i really needed to focus on with the right information and it happend to be the best choice i made investing my time into this because it gave me everything i needed to know and more! i am now confident with my own looping and sprites, and much better ways of the headach i was having with fps, this book is not just good to give a once over! for me it is also an ideal reference book.
The way the book has been written is very straight forward and informative this makes it easy to follow, you can copy and paste the code or download the code if you have a paperback copy however if your new to development and really keen to learn i find that by writing the code myself gives me that bit extra of my learning progress and comes across clearer then copy and pasting chunks of code.
I hope this book helps you all as much as it has helped me, if your really serious about android games development then you can never have enough learning books, i do highly recommend to add this to your front collection.

From the PREFACE
In the past several decades, there have been numerous books published on the science and treatment of eating disorders (ED) and hundreds of volumes written on the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of substance use disorders (SUD)/addictions. At least to our collective knowledge, this is the first textbook to completely focus on the co-occurrence of these disorders. This project was born out of our surprise and deep frustration with both the lack of evidence-based research and treatment protocols for this comorbid population and the lack of available treatment programs, at all levels of care, that effectively serve consumers with both ED and SUD. With up to 50 % of ED patients meeting criteria for a SUD or addiction and 1/3 of SUD patients reporting eating pathology, it is remarkable how few people in either field are fully trained to address both disorders. Additionally, we were hoping to strengthen connections between two fields that rarely communicate. With these issues in mind, we felt the time was right to assemble leading experts from each field and ask them to work together to produce a "state of-the-art" textbook that could not only educate practitioners in both fields but also promote cross-training and further collaborative research.

The 30 chapters are organized into 3 major parts. The 1st, "Research Perspectives," explores the science of ED, SUD and addictions. Our researchers were tasked with the responsibility of reviewing and reporting on what is known about each disorder independently and to discuss the similarities and differences between these disorders according to their topic. In order to make this part relevant to treatment providers, each author was asked to identify how this research can guide and inform clinical practice with dually diagnosed patients. The first two chapters focus on how animal research has informed our understanding of biological and behavioral factors that contribute to the development of ED and SUD as well as the relationship between eating and drug use behaviors. Chap. 3 explores the neurobiological mechanisms and neurotransmitter/brain circuit alterations that may be common to both disorders. The authors of Chap. 4 discuss the finding from neuroimaging studies that examine shared and distinct domains of functioning (i.e., executive control, reward/motivation, emotional reactivity, memory/learning, and interoceptive awareness). Chap. 5 reviews the current empirical literature indicating that AN, BN and SUD are influenced by genetic factors and may indeed share a similar genetic architecture. In Chap. 6, the authors examine dimensions of personality pathology and personality disorders and their relationship to both ED and SUD. Chap. 7 tackles the issue of problematic exercise. Theoretically, is pathologically excessive exercise an addiction or a compulsion? The authors discuss the emerging literature and its relationship to eating pathology, SUD and other behavioral addictions. Nutritional aspects, particularly the nutritional deficits and their clinical and neurological manifestations in both ED and SUD, are discussed in detail in Chap. 8. Chap. 9 explores the emergence of significant problems such as alcohol use disorders and ED following bariatric surgery. Chap. 10 begins with a scholarly review of effective prevention models that have been utilized in either the SUD or ED fields and concludes with proposed guidelines for the development of a program designed to address both disorders simultaneously.�
Part II, "Clinical Perspectives," begins with 2 chapters that are designed to initiate cross-training between fields. Chap. 11 was developed to educate substance abuse specialists that have limited knowledge or expertise in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of ED. Likewise, Chap. 12 provides an overview of the psychoactive properties of drugs of abuse, clinical characteristics of individuals with SUD, and evidence-based treatments for SUD. Chap. 13 confronts the highly controversial issue "Are eating disorders addictions?" The author identifies both the pros and cons of this debate and challenges professionals from both fields to review the assembled data from a theoretical, clinical, and research perspective. The authors of Chap. 14 provide a comprehensive overview of both self-report and semi-structured interview instruments currently used in both fields. The authors of Chap. 15 provide a detailed description of the medical complications commonly encountered in ED and SUD and explain the importance of medical management and monitoring throughout the treatment and recovery process. The role of negative affect in both the development and maintenance of ED and SUD is explored in depth in Chap. 16. Chap. 17 investigates the role of stress, adversity, and trauma in the etiology and treatment of ED, SUD, and behavioral addictions, with a focus on the role of PTSD in mediating their comorbidity. The emerging science of epigenetics as applied to these populations is also considered. Chap. 18 is devoted to a comprehensive discussion of behavioral addictions (gambling, kleptomania, Internet addiction, and hypersexual behavior). Chap. 19 takes a closer look at another behavioral addiction, compulsive buying disorder, and its relationship to both ED and SUD. Chap. 20 concludes this part with an informative discussion of muscle dysmorphia, body image dissatisfaction, ED, compulsive exercise, and anabolic steroid abuse in males.

Part III, "Treatment Perspectives," was designed to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of evidence-based practices in the treatment of ED and SUD. Based on what is known from each field independently, we asked each author to make recommendations on how they could integrate these findings for the treatment of comorbid patients. We are extremely pleased, not only with their collaboration with experts from a different field but also the creative and thought-provoking recommendations that are detailed in each chapter of this part. Chap. 21 begins with a discussion of how programs currently dedicated to the treatment of either ED or SUD can modify their protocols to more effectively integrate treatments for the comorbid patient. In Chap. 22, the authors explore the evidence-based approach of motivational interviewing to help patients with both ED and SUD resolve their ambivalence about change and recovery. Nutritional therapy for dually diagnosed patients is discussed in detail in Chap. 23, with a specific emphasis on the creation of an individualized treatment plan. Chap. 24 proposes a model for combining the CBT models that currently exist in each field into a single treatment that allows for the use of modular-based integration, targeting aspects of several comorbidities and personality. Treatments that include mindfulness as a core therapeutic strategy are outlined in Chap. 25, with a special emphasis on ACT, DBT, and MBRP. The authors of Chap. 26 summarize the empirical evidence for the use of family and couples therapy in the treatment of ED and SUD and then outline how to adapt family-based treatments for adolescents with both ED and SUD. The authors of Chap. 27 provide the reader with a comprehensive review of all the self-help approaches that are currently utilized to augment treatment for individuals with ED and SUD. Chap. 28 tackles the complex issue of exercise in the treatment of patients with these comorbid disorders. Alternative and complementary therapies including yoga, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, hypnosis, herbal medicine, light therapy, spiritual healing, and art therapy are often provided in the course of treatment for both ED and SUD. The authors of Chap. 29 evaluate the effectiveness of each of these approaches. The book concludes with a discussion of ethics and the controversial topic of civil commitment in Chap. 30.

Must Read for Clinicians and Researchers in Addiction and Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders, Addictions and Substance Use Disorders fills a much needed gap in the field. Given the high co-occurrence of these illnesses, we need to adopt treatment approaches that will address both problems for our patients if they are to achieve complete and meaningful recovery. The thoroughly researched chapters in this book highlight the opportunities and challenges for bringing the two treatment communities together to find ways to integrate their treatments to help patients with co-morbidity, rather than addressing just one problem or the other. Rather than be insulated in our areas of specialty, we need to reach out to cross-train eating disorder and addiction experts. This represents a revolutionary approach to treatment that is rarely practiced now, but needs to become the standard of care. The book contains the research and clinical expertise of leaders in both the addiction and eating disorders fields. There is no better reference on these topics.

With "Eating Disorders, Addictions, and Substance Use Disorders," editors Timothy D. Brewerton, M.D., and Amy Baker Dennis, Ph.D., fill a significant gap in the literature. Theirs is the first book to focus on the co-occurrence of eating disorders (EDs), addictions, and substance use disorders (SUDs). Importantly, the editors bring light to the fact that up to 50% of ED patients meet criteria for a SUD or addiction and 1/3 of SUD patients report eating pathology. Clearly, this state-of-the art book is a must-read for professionals who treat either disorder. "Eating Disorders, Addictions, and Substance Use Disorders" is also for patients and their loved ones as well as for educators and journalists. About the Author
In 1996, while still an undergraduate, Dr. Julian Darius founded what would become Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. After graduating magna cum laude from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), he obtained his M.A. in English, authoring a thesis on John Milton and utopianism. In 2002, he moved to Waikiki, teaching college while obtaining an M.A. in French (high honors) and a Ph.D. in English. In 2011, he founded Martian Lit, which publishes creative work, including his Martian Comics. He currently lives in Illinois.

A great book on a weird book

Who doesn't love Jack Kirby? The man is like the affable grandfather that made, then broke, the mold for making comics. His style has been paid homage more in comics than even Kubrick has in film. But, for all Kirby's lovableness there was a weirdness to him. One that was salient in works like the 2001 comic book adaptation. Dr. Julian Darius is cutting through the weirdness to bring to light the major themes and tropes of Kirby's fantastic work. If you are a 2001 and/or Jack Kirby fan, you won't be disappointed.

Nice Starting Point

Nice to see a critical review of Jack's work but it would have been nice to see some other opinions sprinkled in. There's a lot of "source material" out there -- from Mark Evanier to John Morrow to own kids -- so I'm sure it couldn't have been too difficult to shine a little more light on the subject. At any rate, anything written on Jack Kirby is better than nothing at all so in that respect I applaud the effort!

Interesting read on one of Jack Kirby's later works.

This was an interesting treatise on a comic book series. I'll give anyone props for writing about Jack Kirby (or any of the classic comic book art legends of the day), and this is one of Kirby's stranger works. Not sure if it qualifies as "weirdest" even in Jack's oeuvre, considering "Devil Dinosaur" and "The Eternals" from the same period.

The author does a good job covering the treasury-sized 2001: A Space Odyssey special and the individual issues of the short-lived series. Few non-comic fans will probably even remember the series, having been produced nearly a decade after the original movie had premiered. The only thing of note about it, besides Jack Kirby's work, was the introduction of the character that would become known as Machine Man. The rest was all Kirby - his take on another form of science fiction (he'd already done the ancient astronaut/Chariots of the Gods thing with The Eternals and his own unique mythos with the Fourth World/New Gods over at DC Comics).

It's an interesting and nearly enlightening read, but this is definitely just something for the comic book fan or the niche Arthur C. Clarke/Odyssey aficionado.

Rajneeshization of the Astavakra

The title reads first 'Osho', then 'Enlightenment', then at the end, we read 'Ashtavakra'. So this is the order of importance of this package. Osho's talk first, the talk is on enlightenment and Ashtavakra makes an appearance! So this is a talk on enlightenment rather than a commentary of the Ashtavakra Gita.

So if you are expecting to buy this book to read a rendering of the Ashtavakra Gita, you will be disappointed. To compare your favourite part from another book on this gita, you will be flipping back and fourth through the grey pages looking for a needle in a haystack.

But this book is advertised as a discourse on the mystic Ashtavakra rather than a straight rendering and the price of the paperback makes it worth buying. I only mention the price because I was once considering buying the expensive hardcover. If I had I would have called the book a rip off. But at the paperback price, it is well worth a look.

So if you want to become acquainted with what Osho is saying, I recommend a straight translation of the Astavakra Gita. The Swami Chinmayananda version is the most profound and includes other examples from the Upanishads, the Yoga Vasistha and the Bahagavad Gita, which also makes it a great intro to Hinduism.

As for Osho, I can easily imagine the spell he cast when sat in his presence. This guy really had the photographic memory to spin a good yarn and His disciples thought he was enlightened instead of a crazy guy.

The main thing I like about the first batch of crazy guys is that they had solid intelligence, they had something to say and they had great charisma. Before the internet one had to go out and gather followers and you need some talent to do that, and to get the girls. You needed those skills to get noticed in those days.

Today any Tom Dick and Harry can claim enlightenment and there are hungry people desperate for confirmation that enlightenment exists who are only too happy to believe!

From viewing him on You Tube, it's clear that Osho was a very charismatic talker and he told great stories and made jokes, however, written in words, the charisma is not there. Imagine being able to read music notation of Mozart but never being able to actually hear the music? Reading Osho's words feels like understanding the music notation. Alas, reading the music score isn't music.

Saying all that, being an early crazy guy, and comparing the current batch of enlightened beings, you actually miss the crazy guys!

So high recommendations all around for any book by Osho, more so than the current batch of bipeds walking about the planet claiming to be Brahman! At least Osho had serious brain power and a charismatic personality. The current crop, with zero personality and zilch to say, only exist because of the gullibility of man (I'm hoping the women will be an improvement as soon as they seize power).

Osho was controversial but he did have a big following. His disciples saw Osho and Ashtavakra as One. This is a glitch in American Vedanta and can't be helped!

With the American glitch, we have an egalitarianism of enlightened beings who are all God. But instead of the Gods high up in Olympus, being out of reach for mortals, now the morals are proclaiming that they are Gods, and fast! Oh Dickens!

I once heard a guy on that loony Buddha at the Gas Pump podcast claiming that because he is Brahman, and the real message Jesus preached was a non-dual message, and therefore he is Jesus and the Buddha combined, but for a catch, he added that because all that business was 2000 years or so years ago, and because we, he meant those in the meeting, have progressed, then the spiritual people in the room are more advanced than Jesus and the Buddha! This Gods name is Francis Bennett and he has a following as we speak!

The ridiculous interviewer, Rick Archer, agreed with all his heart that yes, we are all 'waking up'!

This is the modern merry-go-round. One man proclaims that he is in the state, the other guy also, and all are awake now and they confirm their friends awakening and it goes on and on ad infinitum.

These clowns know for certain nothing exists, they see appearances as illusion, to them the inexpressible is apparent, and on it goes.

It's getting to this ridiculous stage. At least people like Osho knew a few languages and had real charisma. Most plonkers today are Facebook gurus, they gather in none duality meetings and they hold God-ings (satsanga)!

There is some advertising for Osho (TM) communes at the back which speak about Osho like he's still alive and so giving the obligatory cult feel, but this in no way detracts from the nectar you will taste from the lips of Osho.

Two impressive recommendations

Discourses on the Great Mystic Ashtavakra: Enlightenment The Only Revolution. By Osho. India: Rebel Publishing House, 2008. Hardcover, 405 pages. ISBN 8172612265

The first recommendation is that of the Advaita scholar, Dennis Waite, for the man Osho; the second is that of Osho himself for a very early and pure Advaita text known as the Ashtavakra Gita (or Samhita).

We learn from the recommended reading list in Dennis Waite's authoritative Back to the Truth: 5000 years of Advaita that Osho's books are mainly transcriptions of talks he gave to his disciples and that many, like the present book, are based on a particular classic work. For Waite, "there is no denying that some of [Osho's] recorded material is extraordinarily perceptive. He is also capable of transmitting it in a very clear manner, interlaced with many (often rude) jokes to keep one awake" (p.517). Jokes in a book on a subject as heavy as Advaita, and rude ones at that? This has got to be a first.

As for the Ashtavakra Gita, Osho himself writes: "Man has many scriptures, but none are comparable to the Gita of Ashtavakra. Before it the Vedas pale, the Upanishads are a mere whisper. Even the Bhagavadgita does not have the mere majesty found in the Ashtavakra - it is simply unparalleled."

Given two such strong recommendations, the present book is clearly one that anyone interested in Advaita Vedanta should seriously consider acquiring. Great book but be aware

I downloaded the Kindle version of this book and it is GREAT... only down side is that it does not have eReader page numbers ONLY has "locations" .... so for all I know page 20 is location 5547... but I have no way of knowing! Sad but now I know for future uses to look in the product details for page number ability.

About the Author
Janet Gonzalez-Mena started her early childhood career in a cooperative preschool as a parent volunteer back in 1966. She then became a Head Start volunteer and ended up as a teacher in a preschool for Spanish-speaking children and their families in 1970’s. She has also helped open several pilot programs including a therapeutic child care program and a home-based bilingual preschool program. When Magda Gerber came into her life in the mid-1970’s, Janet signed up for an internship with her at the Children’s Health Council in Menlo Park, California. As a result of that experience, later, when she became a child care director, she was able to incorporate much of what she learned into her work and was influential in expanding that program to include an infant center. Training and teaching adults has always been sideline, even when she was working with children and families. She worked as a Head Start trainer and as adjunct faculty in 4 community colleges plus the University of California Santa Cruz credential extension program. She taught for 15 years as full time faculty at Napa Valley College in the Child and Family Studies Program. Since 1991, she has been part of the faculty for WestEd’s Program for Infant-Toddler Caregivers (PITC) Training of Trainer Institutes. Janet has been writing along with teaching for all these years and is author of numerous articles and 13 books related to early childhood, including Foundations of Early Childhood Education; Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers (with co-author Dianne Eyer); and Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences (Formerly Multicultural Issues in Child Care). She wrote Dragon Mom about herself as parent to help early childhood professionals alleviate guilt when their parenting doesn't live up to their high standards. Her latest passion is understanding more about the Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary, where Magda Gerber came from. It took her 30 years to get there after she first heard of it, but her first trip to it in November of 2003 merely whetted her appetite. She has made two more since and is planning for another one. She is fascinated by the approach and is convinced that this residential nursery is a model for the world. She is continuing to learn more about how this approach can be used to improve infant-toddler care and education programs in the United States. She is also working with a group in Mexico to explore how the approach might fit into their models of residential care for infants and toddlers. Janet has a Master of Arts Degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks in Pasadena, California.

Tenured Professor of Early Childhood Education / Child Development at Canada College since 1970, Department Coordinator since 1978 (and author of 30 courses within the ECE/CD Department). Dianne has served on various college committees during the last few years including the Articulation Self Study Committee and the Chairperson for the College Council from 2002 to 2004. She received specialized diversity training under Title V in 2002. In the late 1990’s she was a presenter at the Annual Conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children in Atlanta, GA and Washington D.C. respectively. She is the co-author of Infants, Toddlers and Caregivers, sixth edition, McGraw-Hill, released in 2004. Her community experiences include: Task Force member for the Advancing Careers in Child Development Project (Pacific Oaks College, Pasadena CA); San Mateo County Consortium for Quality Programs; SMC Partnership Council; and membership in SMAEYC. She has been responsible for several grants within the ECE/CD Department including: Foster Care Education, SAFE START/Violence Intervention in ECE (Centers for Disease Control); and the Family Support Program (a PSP and The Council collaboration). She is currently coordinating a grant with First 5 San Mateo County to recruit and retain quality ECE/CD teachers and providers in the field. She is also a Professional Growth Advisor for the Child Development Permit.

Excellent ECE resource

This textbook is required reading for my Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Infants and Toddlers class. It's is well written, easy to read, gives many examples of quality care, and you're able to access videos that complement the teaching. I recommend it to parents who want to learn about how to "respect your baby" in a whole new light. I also recommend it to child care centers because it's easy to distracted in the busyness of everyday work and lose sight of communicating respect to children.

Amazing book for parents and caregivers in childcare

This book is the most wonderful thing I've read on the topic of daycare. The "responsive approach" that it talks about is something that I do anyway, naturally. The outlook on this book helps parents and caregivers gain a perspective of how to help children grow and how to treat them with respect. If they fall down, don't just rush over and pick them up. Ask them if they are ok first, just as you would with an adult. Help children learn to help themselves and discover their own abilities.

If nothing else, get this book over others in the same category. I've read a lot of different materials and this is the most wide, encompassing book on kids and their needs in a responsive care giving situation. i highly recommend this book ! it's truly inspiring and makes you think more about how children think and work in this world.
