About the Author
Actually, we know very few things about him... This is the first book (and the only one...) written by Jack Torrance, who accepted the job of the winter caretaker at the "Overlook Hotel" which always gets snowed in during the winter. While his family looked around the hotel during closing day, the psychic hotel cook discovered the psychic abilities of Jack's son Danny, and Danny's ability to detect ghostly presences in the hotel. In the cook's family, this ability was called "shining". When the hotel became snowbound, Jack Torrance was driven mad by the ghosts in the hotel, but he began to write his masterpiece: this book.

Get the Grady Edition Instead

As earlier reviewers have noted, this is a reprint of the classic 1970 Grady edition (itself a reprint of the 1921 Overlook folio version). These earlier editions included an appendix containing numerous vintage black-and-white photographs and newspaper articles to accompany the text. The illustrations are strangely altered or even omitted in this reprint.

The defects in formatting are more glaring in the Kindle edition, although it has been noted that a portrait of the author will occasionally appear on your Kindle screen saver if you turn the device off without first exiting the book. Some have analogized the author's pose in this ghostly digital image to classic paintings of an occult figure referred to as the Baphomet, while others insist that Jack's arms are arranged to resemble those of astronaut Neil Armstrong waving to viewers of the famous moon landing.

I must mention that this edition, truncated as it is, continues to inspire a new generation of readers. Recently, for example, I lent it to a niece of mine. She did not care for it at first. In fact, she stole a pack of matches and tried to burn it. But I CORRECTED her.

An unsurpassed classic.....

When I first heard about the publication of this eagerly awaited work, my thoughts were first of disbelief, for I had heard rumours of it's release, but surely these were only rumours, right?? WRONG!! Imagine my utter excitement then, when this piece of literary genius was finally unleashed in all its powerful, emotive and deeply moving form.

The author takes our main character, himself a victim of unspeakable wrongs, on a journey beyond any other I have encounted in any publication in many years. The plot twists and turns at an almost dizzying pace, yet keeps the story believable while at the same time sending our characters on the most important and dramatic adventure. It is an original work, yes, but also we seem to have heard this story a thousand times before, yet it is Torrance's unique writing skills that keep this story alive and utterly convincing.

To conclude, this book is a triumph. Never in all my years of reviewing literature have I ever found a piece so moving, charming utterly desparate, yet childlike and innocent as the one you see here. It is superbly written and the characters are simply wonderful.

It's almost as if writing were invented for this book.

Ken Johnson is the author of Ancient Post-flood History, Ancient Seder Olam, and the websites Biblefacts.org, Creationhistory.us and Wordofprophecy.net. He specializes in patristic (early church fathers and their teachings) and ancient history. He currently attends Calvary Chapel Johnson County in Olathe Ks, where he oversees their Bible College and two home fellowships. He received a doctorate in theology from the Christian college of Texas, Texarkana Tx in 1988. He has taught in a variety of Christian schools and churches. He is available for speaking engagements.

As one who enjoys and finds rewards studying prophecies, this is one of the best organized studies I have found. There is a lot to sink your teeth into and some thought provoking revelations to chew on and make a matter of prayer. Overall, I would recommend this to any serious student of prophecy with the caution of not getting caught up in dates and times, but rather in letting the Holy Spirit breathe on what has been revealed in the scripture itself with the help from this author. It is helpful to have a working knowledge of jewish/Hebrew background and understanding to really and appreciate this book. We cannot view any of scripture from a purely Western culture backdrop as most have been taught, otherwise you will miss the patterns and workings of God as understood by those who faithfully recorded all these prophecies and the events surrounding them when they were given. If you read and study with prayer and a teachable spirit in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, then you will receive much blessing, revelation and insight into God's ways, patterns, times and seasons as well as those things that are hidden from the wise and revealed to the humble. However, if you are only reading to find contradiction or as a proof text for your own beliefs or those of any one denomination, you will not receive any benefit or blessing and will actually fullfill the prophecy that says, "having eyes to see will not, and ears to hear, will not".

Not beach or bedtime reading, but an amazing, conservative overview of Bible prophecy

Unlike memoirs, humorous essays, and some other works of non-fiction, ANCIENT PROPHECIES REVEALED will not provide you with hours of casual, easy reading. If you are a serious student of the Bible, however, this book offers a comprehensive, exhaustively detailed overview of prophetical Scriptures and their fulfillments that would take months, even years, for you to compile.

Be advised, however, that Dr. Ken Johnson's expositions concerning prophecy are based upon a literal (grammatical-historical) interpretation of Bible Scriptures. This view leaves room for the interpretation of some words and phrases as being symbolic or figurative, but it insists that the Bible means what it says unless allegorical meanings are obviously intended. (The "Beast," for example, symbolizes the Antichrist, but "one thousand years" means one thousand years.)

The author has formatted his book on a timeline that begins with 3924 BC, the date he assigns to "Creation." An Introduction that asks and answers the question "What is Prophecy" is followed by a dated chart entitled "Outline of the Prophetical Ages." If you will use Amazon's "Search Inside The Book" feature to view the Table of Contents, you will see that the book is divided into two sections. The first section concerns prophecies that have already been fulfilled, while the second section deals with prophecies yet to be fulfilled, those labeled "Future Events--Post 2008."

Each of the eight major divisions in the first section covers a time span that includes from four to thirteen dated events related to that division. Each of these events displays a chart listing sequentially dated sub-events, and each sub-event gives references to Scriptures predicting the event and to Scriptures declaring its fulfillment.

The "Future Events--Post 2008" section is organized similarly, but is without, of course, dates or Scripture references describing these prophecies' fulfillments.

But lest you think this book contains only dates, charts, and Scripture references, I hasten to add that each sub-event is accompanied by a commentary that wonderfully illuminates that event. These commentaries, alone, are worth the price of the book.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the book is the first section's division labeled "Modern Israel." Here, the author gives dates and Scripture references for 53 prophecies that were given during biblical times and fulfilled between the years 1948 AD through 2006 AD. These prophecies include "The Rebirth of Israel," "The Temple Mount Taken," "The Fall of the Berlin Wall," and other modern-day events.

The author's commentaries reveal (to me, at least) that he holds a pretribulational, premillennial, and dispensational view of Bible prophecy, the view accepted by most conservative evangelicals and mainline protestant denominations. However, many of today's conservatives may question Dr. Johnson's 3924 BC as the actual date of creation. Nor do all still accept Usher's now-disproved chronology published in 1654, wherein he asserts 4004 BC to be the date of creation. Creation dates aside, I believe that even theologians with more liberal views will find this book interesting and invaluable for the wonderfully organized material that it contains.

Even though this book may provoke controversy among liberal and conservative Bible scholars, I have rated it with five stars because of its definitive compilation of fulfilled and yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecies. This feature makes it a valuable resource for all students of Bible prophecy.

Review of Several of Ken Johnson's Books!

I have studied the Feasts of God and I love how Ken Johnson intertwines the prophecies of the festivals with the order of prophesied soon coming rapture and other events. You can bet it is a pre-trib rapture! Dr. Johnson does an excellent job of demonstrating this directly from the Bible. If you are a serious student of the prophesies of the Bible, You might also want to read his book "Ancient Messianic Festivals: And The Prophecies They Reveal" and "Ancient Book of Daniel" as well as "Ancient Prophecies Revealed: 500 Prophecies Listed In Order Of When They Were Fulfilled" In my knowing that Daniel's weeks of years are tied into the Shabuah (7 year sabbatical Shemitah year cycles), Ken Johnson brought the weeks of Daniel to life for me. Jesus will remove all those who are His off of the planet at the end of a cycle and the tribulation will start at the beginning of a cycle. I have absolutely no clue which year just the signs Christ said we are to watch for foretold in prophecy. Dr. Johnson also interprets history and Biblical data correctly placing the crucifixion [during a tetrad of blood moons and sackcloth suns over Israel] in 32 [and 33] AD using Daniel's timeline. He had to account for rulers changing the dates and times just as Daniel prophesied would occur. God had the crucifixion take place at exactly the right timing of the sacrifice to the minute on the correct day. Every spring feast fulfilled to perfection. There is no reason to believe the falls feast prophecies won't be the same right down to the exact minute day and year. Since the Book of Daniel has remained sealed, and only recently started to become an open book, I believe we will be seeing and understanding more and more prophecy as we get nearer to their times of fulfillment.Dr. Johnson also reveals the four hundred years of Biblical history that for centuries has been called missing history. It wasn't missing, it was simply written ahead of time and fulfilled to perfection! I look forward to reading his next publication.

Myers (born 1942) is a professor of psychology at Hope College; he has written/cowritten many books, such as The human puzzle: Psychological research and Christian belief, The inflated self, Psychology Through the Eyes of Faith, Psychology & Christianity, What God Has Joined Together: The Christian Case for Gay Marriage, etc. Malcolm Jeeves is a psychology professor who has also written books such as Psychology & Christianity: The view both ways. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 224-page 1987 edition.]

They wrote in the Foreword of this 1987 book, "It is the conviction of the authors... that although psychology and Christianity are profoundly different, yet they interact... It is our conviction ... that Christianity is not just an expression of feelings or values but that it incorporates a body of claims; and that those claims are not just about God but about this world of ours, especially its human beings. Christianity incorporates nothing less than a world view. And about the human beings in that world, psychology speaks." (Pg. ix) They add, "This book is about the relationship between what psychologists are discovering and what Christians believe. Unlike most other books on psychology and religion, this one... identifies major insights regarding human nature that college and university students will encounter in a basic psychology course and ponders how the resulting human image connects with Christian belief." (Pg. xiii)

They suggest, "different levels of explanation can be complementary. The methods of psychology are appropriate, and appropriate ONLY, for their own purposes. Psychological explanation has provided satisfying answers to many important questions regarding why people think, feel, and act as they do. But it does not even pretend to answer life's ultimate questions. Let us therefore celebrate and use psychology for what it offers us, never forgetting what it cannot accomplish." (Pg. 9-10) They add, "Believing that both the natural and biblical data reveal God's truth, we can allow scientific and theological perspectives to challenge and inform each other... There is an additional reason why the Bible does not give us a completed psychology and why we therefore need psychological science. The Scriptures must embody truth not just for us in our twentieth century age but for all people, past, present, and future." (Pg. 15-16)

They argue, "Although Christian faith does not promise escape from the stresses and woes of life, it can help us walk through the valley of deepest darkness. It does so first by offering us an identity---a knowledge of who we are, of our ultimate values, of our mission in life... Second, religious communities offer support in times of stress... Finally, religious experience has the potential to be therapeutic." (Pg. 149-150)
