Really hit home

As a mother who was shocked, (though not at all disappointed), upon learning my second baby was a boy, I really could relate to a lot of the mothers in this anthology. Whether it was because he was my second, because he was a boy, or simply because he was a different kid, my relationship with my son has always been different from that with my daughter. The essays in this collection explore these differences from many perspectives, some heartbreaking (Susan Ito's "Samuel"), some sweet and funny (the great Catherine Newman's "Pretty Baby"). I would recommend this book to any new or expectant mother of a boy, whether disappointed, ambivalent, or thrilled at the prospect. Every mother's experience, like every boy, is unique, but there is much common ground to be found here, along with a lot of good writing and great humor.

A wonderful collection that showcases what it means to raise and love a son, especially from a feminist perspective. Offers different perspectives of motherhood than a lot of mainstream books about raising children. As the new mom of a son, and a feminist, and yes, as a woman who thought I would raise a daughter and did not know what I would do with a son, I appreciated reading about the experiences of these moms of boys.

Wonderful pieces and some are GREAT for opening up dialogue with your son, husband, other males in your life!

I'd put this at the top of a "Must Read" list because it not only has some absolutely wonderful pieces but it really opesn the door to some great conversations with the males in your life. My son and I read and discussed the piece written by the mother of a bully and there were some other essays that he wanted to read himself.

In fact, you'd better be careful about leaving this one lying around the house or you might find it spirited away by the males in the household. I love books where you can read each section separately, especially as I have a very busy life. This book qualifies as the sort you can grab and take with you as you are driving back and forth on "mom chauffeur" duty, leading to insight about the males around you.

Barbara Czarniawska is Professor of Management Studies at GRI, School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Doctor honoris causa at Stockholm School of Economics, Copenhagen Business School and Helsinki School of Economics, she is a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Royal Engineering Academy, the Royal Society of Art and Sciences in Gothenburg and Societas Scientiarum Finnica. Czarniawska takes a feminist and constructionist perspective on organizing, recently exploring the connections between popular culture and practice of management, and the organization of the news production. She is interested in methodology, especially in techniques of fieldwork and in the application of narratology to organization studies.

I fully enjoyed this book

I fully enjoyed this book. I have seen the movie of the book before so I knew pretty much everything that was happening. So I can't judge if the story was suspenseful or not. However, the characters are definitely very different to the ones in the movie. I always can relate very well to the characters in Nora Roberts' books and it was no different here. That's why I enjoy her books so much.

it seems this book is best suited for the 15-21 year olds

As another reviewer pointed out, it seems this book is best suited for the 15-21 year olds. I myself was disappointed- I didn't find anything in this book that I didn't already know. Maybe I needed to read the description a bit better, but when I saw "MAKE UP" in the title, I assumed this would be most of the content in the book. But there's info on how to dress, how to go prepare for a job interview..Very,very basic stuff. There's even a line from the book that says something like, 'The barrel of the curling iron is the part that heats up and curls the hair.' What female doesn't already know that?? Again, the younger females may appreciate this, but this was info that I don't need. So for me, this was a waste of money.

Good for a certain crowd

I'd like to start by saying I'm a huge Michelle Phan fan and have literally watched all of her videos.

But I actually think that this book isn't that helpful for those that have been long term fans. The beauty sections were all information that someone who watches her videos would already know and the life sections contained very general advice presented in a straight forward way that I would have rather Googled than read. I would have preferred something more heartfelt in the life sections.

However, I would say an early teen trying to get to know beauty and what to expect from life would enjoy it. Assuming they don't already watch her videos, since again the beauty sections don't hold much for regular watchers,

Overall it was an easy book to understand and I enjoyed the intro that told me more about Michelle.

Great life advice for teens and young adults alike!

Bought 2 copies for my best friends' high school graduation and I'm now considering buying one for myself. One of my friend's mom actually flipped through the book and really loved my gift idea. She even advised my friend's sister to read through it.

Michelle gives advice from social life to using the computer, beauty, and career. In the first part of the book, she includes a bit of her background/biography. If you haven't checked out Michelle Phan's youtube channel, you're missing out. She gives a lot of honest life advice in addition to being a beauty guru. She is also an entrepreneur and has her own beauty brand.

The book is also very nicely designed, with colored pages and quality material for each page. Even time I looked at the book before wrapping it to give it to my friend, I was a wee bit envious....so buying a copy for myself is in the near future!

Excellent Stone On Which To Sharpen Your Brain

Mate this volume with "Solaris Performance and Tools", grab a few dumps and you will rule the Solaris universe.

Only one thing could be better - the close proximity and availability of the previous Solaris Internals book, as the depth of discussion and explanatory diagrams are occasionally a bit better in the earlier book even though it covers only release 7 through 9.

System programmers really must have this book. If you want to get the best from you machines you really must understand how DTRACE can make your life streets better than it is and that requires this book, eventually.

This book has helped me immensely to understand what is happening 'behind the scenes' not only in Solaris-based systems, but also for systems such as FreeBSD.

Over the past several years, I have become more and more curious about all the technology which has become available in FreeBSD which originates from Solaris: for example, ZFS, Boot Environments (the beadm command), DTrace, along with other subtler technologies which have close analogues in FreeBSD and Unix in general. I think it a great advantage that the authors of this book thoroughly bring their working knowledge of Solaris to the rest of us.

The Canonical Solaris Reference

This book should be in the library of any serious Solaris administrator. It is not a book for beginners, but it is well-organized and well-explained. The authors went to a great deal of trouble to clean up the parts of the original edition that were not as easily understood, and their effort shows.

The examples are clear and well-explained, and the information is indexed and cross-referenced in a way that makes it easy to follow threads across chapters.

The authors of this book have been extraordinarily generous with their time and energy. Jim Mauro was very encouraging and helpful in explaining topics which found their way onto my web site and into my book. The entire community owes these gentlemen a debt of gratitude for their professionalism and their generosity.

Joseph Gallian earned his PhD from Notre Dame. Excellent text. I rarely come across books for upper-level math courses that are this well written. Good pacing, consistent level of difficulty between in-chapter examples and homework problems, and nice inclusion of practical applications. Most importantly, EVERY concept is explained very clearly.

Reliable Resource for Nutritional Health Information

There is a lot of useful information on the internet these days, however, when it comes to health, much of that information is trendy and subject to poor quality research. This book presents an extremely thorough and balanced approach to health and nutrition in a readable manner.

This book isn't content with just telling you what to do, it breaks nutritional health down to basic elements and explains the functions with usable knowledge that will help you address situations that might not be directly covered in the book itself.

I am going to use this book as supplementary material for homeschooling in addition to using it for practical health insights for myself and my family as a whole.

This is a book that I would recommend every household to own.

Nutrition is a must with my husband and I, especially as we get older and wiser! This book is perfect for what anyone needs to know about good nutrition and why it is so important. It even has recipes, which I have tried, and they are great! It is quite a lot to read and that is fine with me - the more knowledge I get, the "smarter" I am in doing the right things to be healthy. Feeling great and positive is, and has always been, a high priority in my life. Great book!!!

This book is a very good comprehensive nutrition book. Not just in its discussion of what is needed for good nutrition, or what vitamin deficiency does and how to correct it. It explains also the biochemistry of the nutritional functions in terms the average person could understand.

Not a book for the person looking for any easy diet to loose weight, or to understand why they are sick. This book is for those who really what the facts!

Beyond the Breath is one of the first books to give a complete overview and description of sensation based vipassana meditation, the form of mediation thought of as the original method of meditation as used by the Buddha 2,500 years ago. This form of meditation, brought to the West by S.N. Geoneka, provides a means to experience emotions directly and nonverbally—accessing the mind through the body. Glickman is nothing if not practical, as his credentials suggest. The editor and publisher of Green Living, an environmental journal, and author of The Mindful Money Guide argues that sensation-based vipassana meditation as taught by revered Indian master S.N. Goenka is the most effective meditation method. Twenty years of meditation appear to have brought Glickman useful clarity: his meditation instructions will help beginners, his unpacking of the idea of Buddhist detachment is insightful and his correlation of new brain research results with ancient Buddhist wisdom is fresh and persuasive. When he moves beyond meditation and the insights of the four noble truths about reality, however, he overreaches. He discusses ethics, karma, nirvana as a nod to the whole complex way of seeing and being that Buddhism offers, yet here seems to be much more un-Buddhistically theoretical. His connections can be hard to grasp: Darwin's consonance with Buddhism is an intriguing idea that is under-explained, and the topic of addiction to pleasure is similarly underdeveloped. The biggest disappointment in the book, though, is the editing. Someone should have corrected the misspelling of Henepola Gunaratana's name in the bibliography as well as a dozen other distracting mistakes in text ("snacked very discretely," "severals times," "compliment and reinforce"). The book's strength is Glickman's nitty-gritty appreciation of the somatic experience of reality. The Buddha knew that suffering hurt. Glickman does well to emphasize the "mindbody" as the vehicle we humans have to drive to nirvana.

Step by step Vipassana (Goenka) meditation !

I went to a Vipassana ( Goenka) retreat 3 years ago but the 4th day my husband and I gave up! To hard for our health! My husband is 68 and I am 57 years. I am very thin and have some back problems . I really think the retreats are designed for very healthy people . Food is scarce , many hours sitting with your back straight....
I was very sad not to have the possibility of learning the complete Vipassana meditation method. I haver read the few books I could find about Vipassana (compared with many many books about other types of meditation ), but none of them explained what is most important and only taught in the (Goenka) Vipassana retreats: complete, clear and detailed instructions. Finally I found this wonderful book and I really thank Mr Glickman for giving my husband and me and hope many other people too the opportunity to learn deeply the Vipassana meditation specially when going to a retreat is not possible.
The book is also rich in explanations on how to work with the difficulties of human mind in a very didactic way.
I hope this book could have a bigger display and can be obtained as a kindle book too so that many people can know about it and buy it. I searched before in amazon and could not find it before.

First rate introduction to Vipassana Meditation and Buddhist thought

Author Marshall Glickmn details the difficulties and discomforts (even suffering a
'traditional' clubbing from a Zen Master in the process) during the decades he spent
trying different Buddhist meditative techniques, looking for the most effective
method to transcend his ego. His excellent book about Vipassana Meditation,
"Beyond the Breath", (no clubbing in that technique) was the result of his search.
Glickman thinks Vipassana is likely closest to the style of meditation practiced
by the Buddha himself. The author takes us on a very intellectually accessable
tour of Buddhist and related Western philosophical thought, including showing how
modern science supports what the Buddha taught about people and the Universe
thousands of years ago. Buddha was searching for the source of human suffering and
a way to find relief from it. Glickman tells us what answers Buddha found and how
Vipassana Meditation can have a relieving effect on our own sufferings today.
"Beyond the Breath" is one of those books you regret having to put down.
I think you will very much enjoy reading it, and through it meeting a very erudite
and likable author.
Now that I have read his book, I have no excuse for not committing to practicing
the technique, though it may even take a little Zen clubbing to get me going.
From my reading, Marshall Glickman is very understanding about such very human
problems and his book includes lots of helpful advice about getting started.

This Is The One

i've purchased this book at least 15 times in my life to give it away. You dont have to be Buddhist to read or benefit from the teachings and practice; most people who i gave it to were not.
If you want to understand the science behind meditation, if you want to enliven your practice, if you just want a little help with the day to day upsets in life and manage your emotions...READ THIS BOOK.
It's actually classified as a "Self Help" book, and thats the section you'll find it in at Barnes & Noble, and it truly is. Glickman nailed it!
