About the Author
Jean-Paul Pallud graduated as a physicist at Grenoble in 1973. Since 1976 he has written many articles on the Second World War. He flies light aircraft as a hobby. Jean-Paul Pallud currently lives in France with his wife and three chidren.

Great Book for Wargamers

This book is great for wargamers and others interested in two of the key German forces in WW II's Battle of the Bulge. Kampfgruppe Peiper is shown with great detail as to what types and quantities of tanks and troops were at specific places at specific times. The battles at Stoumont and La Gleize are well documented and the writing style will put you in the heat of battle. You will want to supplement this fine book with another Osprey title, The Ardennes Offensive,VI Panzer Armee.

Intriguing Part of the Battle of the Bulge

When I was ten and began building models of tanks from WW2, I wished I could afford an Osprey book based on the vehicle or the battles it fought. The illustrated publisher's quick histories, full-color artwork plates, maps and photographs are unique and entertaining. They, more often than not, provide a great entry point to a particular piece of history (though sometimes the authors have more passion than expertise).

This particular work unveiled an aspect of the Battle of the Bulge that I was not entirely clear on. Hitler commissioned SS Commando Otto Skorzeny to create a special unit to disrupt and gain key points behind Allied lines. What made this unique is that they would pass themselves off as Americans wearing US uniforms and using US weapons and vehicles. What I did not know was that this largely failed and the unit was reconstituted into the overall attacking force which then supported Joachim Peiper's Kampfgruppe. I actually confused the massacre at Malmedy thinking that disguised Germans had carried it off but it was actually forward elements of the regular German force.

The work is interesting as it covers the attempt to hobble together English-speaking combatants from the German ranks while scrounging up captured equipment, how they reshaped the hulls of Panther tanks to resemble M10 tank destroyers, used specific markings so they were not engaged by their own troops, and it debates the cause of the Malmedy massacre. The author also disputes the now famous photography of Peiper supposedly checking his progress against a road sign as not being him (I have seen it referenced in so many works as him that this is very curious). Overall, there is decent detail and great photos.

I do worry about Osprey's format overall. They are pricey publications for their length and they need to rethink their offer in this digital world or may lose relevance.

One of the best Osprey books
By illusion buster
To me his is one of the best Osprey books I have seen the color plates alone are almost worth the price of the book. You get 16 armored vehicles, 4 of the vehicles are German armor disguised as American Armor. The German armor yellow seems too light in the plates but other than that they are very well rendered. You also get 9 very well done German soldiers by Ron Volstad. There is also a nice selection of photos for such a short book (64 pages).

Photo Backdrop Secrets - DIY!

I was about 60% into the book before I saw the part the title lead me to expect! There was a lot of general review and Dan does not draw a distinction between background and backdrop, which may be appropriate for the beginner who does not have a backdrop stand. The title lead me to expect some discussion about backdrop stands, choice of fabric, possibly choice of paint for fabric, green screen, seamless papers,... It does address replacing backgrounds using digital imaging techniques at a high level. He mentions Photoshop (which is expensive), and Gimp (which is free but has a steep learning curve), but does not mention Photoshop Elements (which is more reasonably priced and very suitable for a beginner).

A couple of things I don't recall seeing mentioned are lighting a plain white or coloured backdrop from the back and the effect of strong light on gels. I find colour from gels washes out if the light behind the gel is too bright or the other lights are too bright, so when using gels, I turn the light's power down considerably compared to what I would use when not using gels and frequently switch to softboxes instead of umbrellas to keep more of the key and fill lights off the backdrop.

The book is a good starting point for those who want to get deeper into their photography but may be disappointing for photographers who have reached or passed the intermediate level.

Some things to ponder and practice

I was not as impressed with this book as I have been with others by Dan. But with that being said I did find interesting and enlightening the sections on graduated and color filters, using colored gels to get colored backgrounds, I also enjoyed reading about taking photographs for the sole purpose of using them as a digital background. It may not be as good as some of Dan's other books, but there are still many good things to learn.

About the Author
"Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D.," is Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he chaired the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice for nearly 20 years. He currently serves as director of the Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and think tank focusing on issues of crime and justice. Dr. Schmalleger is also founder and codirector of the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium (http: //cjcentral.com/cjdlc).

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's degree (1970) and a doctorate in sociology (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. He served as an adjunct professor at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he helped develop the university's graduate program in Security Administration and Loss Prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. Schmalleger also taught in the New School for Social Research's online graduate program, helping build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. This was exactly the textbook I needed for my Administration of Justice course. The chapters are well-written and make difficult concepts easy to understand. Great for learning the basics of criminal justice.

About the Author

Abigail Trafford is an author, journalist, and public speaker. She wrote the My Time column at the Washington Post and has been a commentator for Washington Post Radio and a syndicated columnist with Universal Press Syndicate. For fourteen years she was the Post's health editor and previously worked at U.S. News & World Report as a writer, senior editor, and assistant managing editor. She received journalism fellowships at the Harvard School of Public Health in 1982 and 2002 and was a visiting scholar at the Stanford University Center on Longevity in 2007. She lives in Boston and Vinalhaven, Maine.

It's a good book to read

It's a good book to read. If you are wearing the shoes I wear of this being nothing like the life you wanted for yourself, it's just a book that reads easy and gives some insight into life and examples of others. Totally would say pick it up. It was my therapist who said to read it and its worth a read for anyone even just getting married even. Puts a little perspective on marriage and this crazy notion that it's all going to be perfect and lovely when reality is most of them are not.

A great companion

Something to hold on to, especially right after the defining moment when you've made the decision to split. I go back to it a lot and read parts that pertain to whatever crazy time I'm in. It makes you feel less alone and unmoored. I'm looking forward to when I'm in the space covered in later chapters about resolve and less crazy time.

Start of a new series

This book is the start of a new series by John Ringo. The setting is contemporary and deals with the outbreak of a man made virus that starts with flu symptoms followed by rabies-like symptoms -- causing extreme aggression. This fits in with the concept of a "viral zombie" outbreak -- the infected are not "dead", but they are not curable and have lost virtually all "human" traits.

The story has several points of view, with the main POV's being from the members of a "survivalist" (or "preparer") family that initially avoids the plague and then works with others during the spread of the plague (and collapse of civilization). There are several exciting action sequences and various moral dilemmas that the survivors have to face (which make for a great read and which I will not spoil here).

The only downsides are that this is the first of what is clearly a series and I was left wanting more. The fate of characters introduced in earlier parts of the story remain unknown (still alive, dead, who knows?). There are hints that a still unknown "enemy" released the plague and is still out there. The book does not so much have an ending as a pause in the action -- I hope the next book comes out in the near future.

So overall, a fun read with more installments to come.

Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

The story opens with a bang when a school teacher, Steven Smith, gets a coded message from his brother in New York to warn him of a general emergency. Their plan called for the alert to trigger immediate action: gather his family, "grab the bug-out bag and activate [his] Zombie Plan." It's all fairly dramatic as he walks out of his high school classroom, pulls his daughters out of their schools on the pretext of an auto accident involving his wife, and leaves town with a car and trailer loaded with food, water, supplies, ammo and plenty of firearms. This is a John Ringo novel after all, so the Smith's have plenty of firepower and Steve is a veteran of the Australian paratroopers. His brother is a former Aussie SAS operator.

Most of the story takes place at sea as the Smith's escape the zombie plague. However the danger only increases when they engage in search & rescue operations and Steve Smith forms an ad hoc sea-going militia. I preferred the action in the first half of the book when they travel from Virginia to New York City to rendezvous with the brother, who is head of security for "Bank of Americas." Apparently the bankers don't want to die in a zombie apocalypse or nuclear attack and have prepared accordingly. If true, and I don't have much difficulty in believing it, that militates in favor of emergency preparedness for all of us.

The preparedness message might be diluted by the fact that it really is a zombie story. The victims, infected with the man-made virus (exact origin unknown), eventually have symptoms of "extreme homicidal psychosis with reduced mental capacity."

About a year ago I heard John Ringo discussing at a con the very real danger of a zombie-making virus being purposely released from an underground lab by the bio-warfare equivalent of "script-kiddies" who inflict computer viruses on the civilized world. We live in a world where technological advancements have raced ahead of the moral development of large portions of the world's population (e.g. nuclear warheads in the hands of mullahs firmly attached to an Eighth Century attitude towards killing infidels).

Hate to say it, but might be one of his best

Surprised to see Ringo jump into zombie books, but he certainly has written about everything else. The book seems to be well researched, is very well written and certainly has extreme action as always. This has to rank right up there with March Upcountry series. A lot of strong military humor, had me rolling on floor wiping tears out of eyes. I have read all of his books and this one is awesome fun reading.

This series keeps me clamoring for more.

While this was not my favorite of the series so far - if you love high school drama with a few zombies thrown in - this series is for you. Megan Berry is up to her old tricks of doing things her way; Ethan is driving her (and this reader) NUTS!!; Monicster keeps getting in the way. We will have to wait until Book 4 to find out what is going to happen at Homecoming. Who knows?!?

Must read if you heart zombies

Well that low down dirty Monica.....I am hooked to this story and can't put it down. I am gonna not be very happy with Ethan if he is involved with this mess....lol. I hope Meg gets to the bottom of this and fast and I can't wait to find out what is going on. Love this series so far it's a must read!!
