The abstract God of modern monotheistic Judaism, Christianity and Islam is a comparatively recent creation. In later times the myth of a messianic deliverer was combined with that of the pagan god-man who suffered a horrible, excruciating death but was physically resurrected to produce the Christ myth.

Unlock the Mysteries
By Mark
I had wanted to add this book to my collection for years after seeing and flipping through it repeatedly at a specialized book store, at a time when I couldn't afford it... and then not seeing it again. Since I hadn't noted down the author or title before it disappeared from the store, I could not search online. Finally I saw it again at a used book store, but at a high price, so I went home and found it on Amazon. Now that I have it and can read it properly, I can gladly say that it more than meets my expectations and memories.
The main aim of this book is to explore the background of the Bible, the cultural and religious milieu from which the ancient Hebrews came, and gradually distanced themselves from and then condemned. From there it continues forward through history to the time of the Christian portion of the Bible, applying similar analysis, and generally showing how the contents of the Bible relate to the world around its writers, as well as different origins of and possible changes to the Biblical texts.
A number of different aspects to Biblical origins are explored throughout the book; one very important one is the relationship of stories in the Bible to the stories of other peoples of that part of the world. All-in-all, very much to be recommended for all with an interest in sacred texts of the Jewish and Christian traditions.
In tone and format, it strikes a fair balance between the scholarly level of writing, and mass market works... it has footnotes for some of the most important references, but not so many as to intimidate those who dislike them, and it gives evidence and chains of reasoning with the least amount of specialized jargon needed to make the points - and explaining those terms that are necessary to use.
Fair warning - those unfamiliar with this kind of exploration may well be shocked by they learn here.

Pure dynamite! So many mysteries explained
By David A. Reitzes
Rarely can a single book answer as many questions as this one does. As the author explains, the mythical basis for Biblical stories is not really a secret, just knowledge that is rarely communicated outside of academic circles. Callahan does an outstanding job of catching readers up with several thousand years' worth of Biblical scholarship, history, and comparative mythology. Buy this book if you want to understand where the stories of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles come from and (as much as is possible) what they really mean -- or if you want to know more about the origins of the Jewish and Christian religions. For me, the sections dealing with the Genesis tales of Creation and the Fall were alone worth the purchase price.

One of the absolute best sources for Biblical Parallels
By Alex Bonson
In Secret Origins, Callahan goes through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelations, pointing out each story's contradictions, historical problems, and parallels to other myths that predate it. This connections Callahan presents are simply fascinating and for most, are too similar to be coincidence. Such stories he analyzes include the origin of Eve, the fall of man, the finding of baby Moses, The sacrifice of Isaac, the slaughter of the innocence, and perhaps most importantly, the life and death of Jesus. This book covers everything. After reading, I have become much more talented in debates with fundamentalists in terms of showing how mythical and unreliable the Bible truly is.
Another enormous plus are the archeological pictures and illustrations he provides which are a huge help in showing the similarities between the stories and religious worships he compares with the Bible's. They are simply amazing and should be presented and taught in every social studies class that focuses on myth and historical cultures.
Why four stars and not five? Because I believe Callahan could have elaborated more on some of the Biblical stories he compares with other myths, such as with the Biblical flood. Noah's Ark is one of the greatest and easiest examples where the writers of the Bible copied from previous myths, since there are several that predate it and are almost exactly alike. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Babylonian story the greatly predates the Bible, you have a man named Utnapishtim being told by the god Ea to build an Ark to save him along with every kind of animal as well as his family from a great flood that will occur in order to eliminate all humans and land animals. Comparing the two stories side by side, it's impossible to simply discard the similarities. Point being, Callahan could have provided more parallels than he does for such a thick book. However, it's excusable when you take into consideration how much he DOES include, offering more comparative research than any other book I've read.
Another downside is that reading this book is can at times become dull when going through parts that go into the finer details of the Bible, such as geography and name translations that would only interest those with a strong interest in the Bible.
Overall, this book is an excellent read for anyone interested in the truth behind the Bible as well as those who seek the similarities between it and other myths. I couldn't recommend a better book that is as educating, fascinating, and resourceful.
I also recommend "Parallel Myths" by J.F. Bierlein, which provides some greater detail on certain stories found in the Bible and others that relate to them, such as Noah's flood and the story of Utnapishtim as mentioned earlier.
